Faked Out by French Toast – I was a fan of Greenpoint Coffeehouse, as I am of most indie-flavored, unique-feeling restaurants, until this past week, when my wife and I stopped in during a recent trip through NYC.
We both ordered the Challah French Toast, which we had had before. (The menu specified the Challah bread, a Jewish bread that makes great French toast.) We didn't get Challah bread, and we weren't actually sure what we got, though it wasn't bad. But we decided to mention it to the waitress, who didn't know what Challah bread was. And then she said that what we were eating was actually leftover hamburger buns with the crusts cut off. She said the kitchen staff often uses them in the recipe.
Now, I'm a small bread snob, sure, but I'm not a huge one. But I was more annoyed at feeling like the cafe had put one over on us. Who pays 7 bucks for a few old hamburger buns, even in New York City? If I want enriched flour with preservatives, I'll pay 25 cents at the grocery store. And don't tell me it's Challah bread when it's hamburger buns -- that just comes across as really unclassy. Bad form, Greenpoint Coffeehouse. I'm sorry I even had to write this review about you, but maybe it'll spur a return to form.
Great Breakfast. – Sampled some omelets there and couldn't finish. Laidback but attentive they were able to gauge our needs and provide refills without being overbearing or over friendly. I am a native you know. %^). Great overall vibe. The bathroom is not to be missed.
One of the first and still the best on the block. – My wife and I have lived above and across from this place for 4 years. The coffee has always been great, the outdoor seating is ideal in the spring and summer, as the midday sun swings around it just right. The breakfast burritos are good to grab and go, and while breakfast/brunch have been consistently good, dinner was lacking a bit until recently. Now there are dishes like herbed chicken, stews, risottos and other hearty dishes that really satisfy at a nice price. Nothing terribly elaborate, just really good food, with veggie options that my wife somehow seems to really enjoy (even though I cannot fathom a dish that's both great and veggie). There's a few beers on tap and some wines that are just adjacent to being "all right" but my wife calls them "entirely drinkable." The staff might look a bit cooler-than-thou but actually are fairly friendly once you engage them. If you take into account their hangovers and the early hours they work, you begin to grasp them immediately, and it turns out they're all pretty lovely. The owner (? still), Louise, is a gem of a woman and brings her own Irish lilt and charm to the setting fairly regularly. Pros: Great for breakfast and brunch, newly-improved for dinner with some very solid dishes, sturdy wooden tables and some booths and easy-chairs indoors, good music if the staff is not too depressed (and even then it's good), outdoor sunshine, dog-friendly. Cons: Can be crowded for brunch, and often filled with hipsters in scruffy beards that just look dirty, not arty.
If you like Cobb Salad this is the place. I have a habit of getting Cobb Salad and restaurants.. always looking for the best. This is it! BEST COBB SALAD IN BROOKLYN! I promise you will like it, take out or in a booth.
Retro diner's got the remedy for java jonesing and late-day breakfast cravings. – With its remote location, dark comfy booths and retro 40s decor, this Greenpoint coffeshop looks like the set of a film noir movie, only instead of Bogart in a fedora, there are hipsters in headbands. Fortunately, the amiable staff makes all feel welcome, plying diners with morning fare such as eggs benedict, challah French toast and organic granola and anytime fare such as burgers, mac and cheese, and a tofu-veggie saute. Dunkable desserts include biscotti and brownies.
