Whoa, Nelly!. I've been working in the neighborhood a few months now, and I really like the shopping in the area. I decided to try this location, because I've gotten a couple of used books from their store in SoHo. The staff is very nice and creative when it comes to the window display. But the freaking prices on the clothes are outta control. They have a pretty good selection if you can afford it. Even used and discounted, I can't get anything more than teacup without the saucer. I still pop in and look around every once in a while hoping I'll get lucky.

Editorial Review. Upscale thrift shop with cheap goods, with proceeds going to help homeless people living with HIV/AIDS.

Beyond overpriced. Sure, it is for a good cause, but the prices are positively ridiculous for a thrift store. I have bought the occasional piece at other locations (although I never got a bargain, so what was the point in shopping here again?) and decided to check out the new Brooklyn location, thinking it would be more reasonable than the Manhattan locations. WRONG. It was quite possibly worse. For example, they had a beat-up pair of Jimmy Choo sandals for $125 and a Forever 21 dress for $25. I don't care WHO the designer is, if a pair of sandals is well worn, $125 is simply insane. The Forever 21 dress probably retailed for $25 new, but it most certainly was not. I will never shop at Housing Works again and I really don't know why anyone else would. There are so many consignment shops in NYC with both a better, hand-picked selection AND cheaper prices. These shops obviously make a healthy profit even though they pay for their merchandise. But Housing Works is completely donation based and yet for some reason more expensive, often with lower quality merchandise? Just because it is for charity doesn't mean I am going to pay more than something is worth. In fact, if said dress and sandals suddenly appeared on eBay, I am positive the final sale price would be lower than Housing Works.
