“The food was terrible and the service lousy; the food was bland and not cooked properly - we had the calamari appetizer for example - it was chewy with no flavor.”
“Perfectly moderate prices and huge portions.”
“The service was friendly if a little slow.”
Wonderful food & bev, for all seasons.
Alchemy is a great spot. The food is consistently delicious.
As cozy as the warm glow is on an autumn afternoon, or a cold winter evening, do not miss the outdoor patio in the summer. It's off the street and in the back. Very peaceful and serene back there.
I would recommend this to anyone, it's a multi purpose location. Everything from a casual brunch with old friends to a nice spot to meet up with a blind date.
Warm & friendly.
Put it on your list.
Don't Bother Unless You Like Lousy And Rude Service Before You Even Sit Down..
At first, this cramped little place seemed to invite with its charmingly rustic decor. Shame all that had to be ruined by the cattiness of the wait staff.
When my girl and I walked in around 1pm, we noticed that two tables were on their ways to be opening up and even a moron knows that it's a lot more intimate for a couple to be sitting together at a booth or a table than to be elbow to elbow at a bar. With that in mind, and being as hungry as we were, we asked for the option of ordering our food as if we were at a table but we'd agree to eat at the bar if no tables cleared out for us by the time the food came.
This idea was considered APPALLING by the hostess and the bartender, yet they didn't actually say so to us. No, they gave us curt smiles at first and then proceeded off to the side to complain to each other about how...APPALLING we were? I thought the deal was fair.
Now, I understand that if you order at the bar, the bartender wants you to eat at the bar and therefore TIP the bar. Understood. Same with the tables. But this was way before they would have to actually do any work, and hence just wanted their respective UNEARNED money. You should have seen their catty little faces all scrunched up as they crabbed to each other about us and our audacious antics! As I said, I thought our deal was fair but even if we were jerks, you don't act like spoiled little (insert female canines word here) in the face of losing potential customers.
This place isn't hurting for customers with all the strangely positive reviews but with people working there like the lightskinned girl with the fuzzy hair playing bad hostess and the short-haired dirty blond with the way-too-dark-and-catepillar-thick eyebrows working there, we're talking about one bad investment.
But if that's your thing, party on. We just walked out - to their mutual glee - and vowed never to return, with equal glee. Good riddance to bad pieces of trash.
Great Brunch and Bloody Mary's. Haven't been here for dinner, but the brunch menu is terrific and the best Bloody mary I've had in the neighborhood. The waitstaff were really sweet. Love the corned beef hash and the choriso plates.
Great Happy Hour, Overpriced (though tasty) Food. So my co-workers and I have been here plenty of times for happy hour and the two-for-one well drink special is well worth it. However, we've taken to only ordering drinks as the food, though delicious (seriously the chicken caesar salad is wonderful) is quite overpriced in our opinions. We like the proximity and overall feel the place and normally we've had great waitresses. I don't know if they were just short-staffed this last time but I personally felt that our waiter was walking the line between sarcastic/funny and just plain rude. Other times our waiter has never had a problem keeping water on our table but this last time we had to go to the bar to ask for it ourselves. One more thing, I had the grilled chicken sandwich and it's just fantastic. Don't be afraid to ask for extra horseradish mayo - it's delicious!
Horrible food, horrible service.
Came across all these postings and thought I'd put my two sense in as well.
I too was a very frequent diner at Alchemy last summer. The brunch was one of the best around and dinner was always out of this world. The service was horrible but the food made up for it.
I'd hadn't been back since late summer and recently my partner and I went for dinner. I was astounded at how much the food had changed since my last meal there - even the menu was different. There was also a foul odor present throughout the place. I'm not sure what has happened but its a shame to see such a great place go down so quickly. I know I will not be back.
Oh and the service is still horrible as well. Save your money and eat at home.
Excellent start, but they've replaced the chef with my pubic school's cook!.
This past summer i was hooked on their tasty brunch special such as the Sweet Guiness Pancakes and the Chorizo Eggs with Jalapeno grits. According to the menu the Guiness Pancakes are served with caramelized bananas, pecans, and "fresh fruit." I'm sure when you think of fresh fruit w/ pancakes you typically think of strawberries or blueberries, or some sort of berry. From summer through late fall my wife and I ordered the pancakes and other tasty menu items every other weekend. We decided to take a break for the holiday so we would spoil our new favorite neighborhood pub grub spot.
In late December we decided to pay a visit to find SLICES OF WHOLE GRAPES on the Guiness Pancakes! The Jalapeno Grits were overcooked and the Chorizo Eggs somehow lacked any distinct flavors. A few weeks later we ordered their signature Alchemy Burger cooked medium rare despite requesting Well-Done.
Love it here!. I created a citysearch account just to write in and recommend this place after my husband told me there were some bad reviews. My husband and I go here all the time, and are consistently impressed. I love the booths, the complimentary fried chick peas at dinner and mini muffins at brunch, and I love the food. My husband goes for the burger or fish and chips. I like their burger too - also the special soups, the mushroom salad, the chicken and the egg scramble (at brunch). It's the kind of place you can go and sit for a long time. And when we do, we're never rushed out. Check out there backyard when it gets warmer. It's a great spot!
Affordable Park Slope jem. From the unassuming decor, I was inclined to order a burger and fries, but I took a chance along with my friend with some skate and risotto. Everything was very surprisingly delicious. And we loved the atmosphere, making friends with the people sitting next to us. It's a really affordable Park Slope jem.
Check Out Alchemy. I am always dubious leaving Manhattan - yes I am a Manhattan snob despite not being any kind of a food expert - but I was really impressed with Achemy. My party shared appetizers and all were delicious. My buddy had the salmon, which was tasty and perfectly cooked. I had a hanger steak which was a delicious and right to the temperature I ordered. They have a nice selection of beers on tap and we had a very good bottle of red the waitress suggested. The service was very friendly and the atmosphere inviting and relaxing. At the end of our dinner I found myself saying "I have to get out Manhattan more often"! I definitely highly recommend Alchemy.
Alchemy has fallen from Grace. Visited Alchemy again - first time back since I had dinner and brunch there in July. What has happened? The menu is horriflying. The risotto was like rice pilaf, the food was cold, the service terrible. The specials??? As I can see by some of the discussions on here something has changed recently. I will defintily not be back ever again.
