Editorial Review for Death & Co – by Katie Heffernan
In Short
Bound to become this bar's trademark is its set of ominous, scorched wood doors, which buffer all sound between the street and the semi-speakeasy they hide. Inside, the immediate gust of age-old jazz and ice rattling in shakers dissolves into an intimate, low-lit scene. Kerosene lamps and crystal chandeliers catch on gold-flecked walls and create shadows in a scored wood ceiling. A strong attention to detail characterizes the decadent small plates, fine wines and cocktails mixed by some of the city's most respected bartenders.

Insider Tips
The ExtrasBartenders, who hail from the likes of Freeman's, the Flatiron Lounge and Pegu Club, serve their Manhattans and martinis with an additional ice-chilled sidecar. In addition to the $12 specialty cocktails, there are well-chosen wines, scotches and whiskies.
On the MenuThink truffle oil mac and cheese and filet mignon wrapped in bacon ($8-$16).
Know Before You GoReservations are not accepted--however, parties of seven or more may call ahead.
Fun FactThe bar is named for a Prohibition-era art movement which produced seemingly anti-alcohol propoganda posters--which were actually encrypted maps to local speakeasies.

The bouncer/doorman who works at this place on Wednesday nights (has dreadlocks) proceeded to call my friend names, remain on the sidewalk to keep staring at her while she walked down east 6th street, stepped on her feet when she opened the door to the bar, and pushed his way into bumping against her physically.......she called the police for a harrassment charge against this bouncer. While the bar has an interesting atmosphere inside and cool decor, I would not go back again based on my friends experience with the doorman. My friend will be following up on the experience she had with authorities based on the experience she had. Other than that I can tell you the place often has private parties and what seems like an upscale, trendy crowd. Peace ;-)

This is what New York City needs more of. A quality place where you can actually hear one another speak. The place is beautifully decorated and is known for its pre prohibition drinks. I don't understand what's not to like? The only con I see, is the door man is a little bit rude and thinks he's cool. Im cool so I know he's not cool. The way I see it, I have never been to a trendy place that has a friendly doorman. It also get a bit touristy , so the whole speak easy thing has come and gone. If you are looking for a night out with a date or a friend, I truly recommend this place. Its time to taste real drinks made with real juices and not cheap stuff from a tin. Learn why Death and Co. is worth the wait and the $.
Pros: the whole shabang
Cons: the door guy, get someone cooler.
