The Scene
Friends and chefs Craig Samuels and Ben Grossman have succeeded in appealing to the casual, eclectic Fort Greene crowd. The wood-covered building, with its front porch open to the street and its small table-and-chairs interior, suits the counter-service atmosphere. Samuels and Grossman advertise their smoking as influenced by multiple cultures, including Southern, Latin and Asian, but they call their version "Brooklyn-style."
The Food
And what does Brooklyn barbecue taste like? For the most satisfying answer, try the meaty wings--tender, perfectly cooked and smothered in a mapley-sweet, jalepeno-spiked sauce. In spite of the distance to Texas, beef ribs make an admirable showing; less so the pork ribs and pulled pork, both of which could benefit from slower, lower-temperature cooking. For maximum pork tenderness, opt for the stewed Tips and Bits, which show off the hardwood smoking. Sides like toothy greens and chile-rubbed corn fare well, while a low-flavor mac and cheese needs retooling.

First visit: eat in: 2.5 hours-rude waitress-rude host-remade order 2 times due to lack of menu items-still didn't get the full order-no comps 2nd visit: takeout: they say 15 minutes-I get there in 15, it takes 30. the pickup window isn't taking payments- the bar says to pay at the pick up window- the line's backed up from pick up customers and the guy at the bar can't work the computer- they give me dirty looks (maybe they recognized me from last time) 3rd visit: deliver: I order $14.63 of food (same order as my pick up but for some reason a dollar less?), she says they have a $25 min for delivery- I say just charge me 15, it's 37 cents short-she says she can't do that- I say ask the boss-she comes back very disgruntled and says this one time only-as I'm saying bye she just hangs up....

I went to Smoke Joint when they first opened & I was underwhelmed because I'm southern & I can cook. But, I live in the neighborhood & it's crowded everytime I go by, so last night I decided to try it again. I got the Brooklyn Wings & Fries. Well, the fries were good. The last time I ate at Smoke Joint, a few years ago, I felt like the meat had a weird taste, like lighter fluid. Last night, when I bit into the wing, I tasted the same thing. It wasn't pleasant. I know they use a smoker. I don't know how smokers operate at all, I just know that the aftertaste in my mouth reminded me of too much lighter fluid. Not pleasant. But, other people seem to like it so maybe it's just me.
