What People Are Saying About Sheep Station

The Scene
Dining in Brooklyn's outback means hoofing it to Fourth Avenue, but the walk works up an appetite for hearty Aussie grub. The bar/restaurant is split with a wooden bar and tables up front, and a spacious dining room, plus sidewalk seating to the back. Slow service works fine for the laid-back bar crowd, but can frustrate hungry diners.

The Food
What Sheep Station does best is serve beer and food without preening or pretense. One of Australia's most famous exports, the meat pie tastes strikingly like chili. For the nibblers, there's a mounding salad of arugula with sharp wedges of Manchengo cheese. The moist Australian barramundi gives indication of the pub's culinary aspirations, but plump mussels lag in a nearly tasteless broth. The burger is for those tired of the same old thing: Topped with beets, pineapple, a fried egg, lettuce, tomato and onion, it's a taste sensation not unlike a tropical meat salad.

All around a good time. Atmosphere and tables were perfect for a group of friends, place had both picnic-table style benches and couple's tables; fireplace was a nice plus. Food was hearty, tasty, and priced awesome. Service was prompt and friendly, but never fake or overly nice. Will be bookmarking this place.

Sheep Station, an Australian bar/restaurant, was one of the first restaurants to set up shop on the major thoroughfare of Fourth Avenue in Park Slope. The front room with the bar is trendy and can be loud, the back room with a fireplace is quieter - except when they're showing rugby games on the TV. Food is eclectic - fish & chips, burger with pineapple (better than it sounds!), great fries. And a great range of beers and some interesting cocktails. Prices are reasonable.

I ordered a $13 lamb sandwich and a beer and didn't feel satisfied when I left. The lamb sandwich was skimpy on the meat and came on a soggy slider-style roll.
