In Short
Maiden Hong Kong's collection of antique sewing machines in the window says it all. This is the place for vintage clothing, alterations and custom designs. The store's garments run the gamut from cocktail attire and costumes to cute sweater sets and casual wear. Buy a rehabbed vintage piece or take a class and learn to sew from the pros. This charming corner space is a blast from the past with plenty of knick knacks to make it homey.

I happened to come across this little store quite by accident- While working on a film, the lead had completely ripped her shirt during a take. Of course we had no replacement, and we had sixteen more setups to go. Changing to a different shirt meant breaking continuity, which is tantamount to complete disaster. We would have to find an exact duplicate. I looked at the torn shirt and almost had another heart attack- a vintage Bill Blass with a butterfly collar. We were screwed. With the entire night in jeopardy and the executive producer about to have kittens, I grabbed my A.D., picked up the pieces of violated fabric and set out to find a miracle. Half a cigarette later, we found one. Just blocks away, my A.D. spies a corner boutique just about to close down for the day, and we walked inside. The feeling that one gets walking into Maiden Hong Kong is not what one generally expects from a Williamsburg boutique- the racks are not overcrowded, and the space is far from claustrophobic. All of the clothing and jewelry is carefully selected and beautifully displayed. And if that is not good enough, Its owner, Wendy, is drop-dead gorgeous. With her looks, she could easily be sipping Cristal in the South of France. But lucky for us she?s here in Brooklyn, generous both with her warmth and fantastic sense of style. And so what about the torn shirt? Not only did we find a replacement, but Wendy was actually able to repair the old one, on the premises. Remember when stores provided a service? Not surprisingly, this five foot, eight inch amalgamation of beauty and brains also freelances as a costume designer, and can create, or repair, anything. Between the incredible fashion finds, quality workmanship, ?starving artist? pricing and unparalleled level of service, Maiden Hong Kong is quite literally, a ?best kept secret? of New York, and believe me, there are not many of these left. Shop there only if you have extremely good taste, or want to pretend like you do.

Only a few blocks away from the lorimer stop on the L, it is a great place to stop by on your way home from work or wandering the neighborhood on the weekend. The dresses and pretty tops are always great, but they also have a really fun selection of men's wear! The decor is super-cute as well. I always have a really nice time speaking with the owner - she has a great sense of style and obviosly really cares about her customers. I would totally recommend this shop to any of my friends! There is something for everyone!

I don't even live NEAR Williamsburg, but I have schlepped out from Park Slope for the purpose of shopping here on several occasions. Lovely, lovely wares, especially the jewelry-- I have at one time ogled at every piece in the shop. Suitable for ladies of all inclinations, be they gentle peach or swash-buckling boho. Kisses to Maiden Hong Kong! 5 big stars.
