The Scene
South Park Slopers hungry for the neighborhood's dining renaissance pack the rather plain restaurant nightly, often squeezing four to a modest wooden two-top or crowding the small bar. Thankfully, the friendly staff rush to fill orders and offer menu advice.
The Food
The dishes may be small, but the intense flavors are a lesson in the power of quality ingredients. If you have just one dish, make it the grilled baby octopus atop fennel salad--the creatures' charred edges add depth to their bright lemon-tinged bath. Turn to the earth with the warm mushrooms salad, brimming with hen-of-the-woods. Mains are regular sized, but continue the simple theme--a tender whole fish arrives baked with only lemon and herbs for stuffing, while the braised lamb shank sits atop a robust black olive spaetzle. Pair the richly sweet chocolate cake with a dessert wine for a fitting send-off.

I arrived Sunday for dinner with 2 others. A seemingly good looking educated waitress/hostess tells us they have 5 minutes till open and to go to another establishment, etc...etc.....That if she let's us in ... she will have to let everyone else in, etc.... Not just an "I am sorry we are not open yet response", but an uncalled for serveral sentence tirade and hostile "talking down" to from someone in their twenties acting on behalf of the restuarant. If I were not with my partner's mother, I would have really faught back verbally at the insults, but did not want to make an already uncalled for situation worse on a Sunday evening. The resturant was empty, there was no line to get in. We asked only to sit down and that we would wait for the kitchen to open which was basically in 5 minutes. Not what you would expect from any restuarant worker, especially in Park Slope, in this economy.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the Slope. The menu is fairly small but, even so, I always have trouble choosing because everything is so good. They use fresh and seasonally appropriate ingredients, and do interesting pairings of flavors. Very good wine list. The service is great -- friendly and solicitous but not intrusive. Pleasant setting and in the warmer months you can sit outside in back. I wish they offered more dessert choices, but that's really my only criticism.

I definitely need to head back to this restaurant - the food is amazing and the night I went was busy - even for a Sunday night! I love good finds like this in the city and definitely need to take my friends there! We will be there.
