“The chocolate tamales were awesome!”
“It can also get quite expensive if you order a couple of drinks and food.”
“My friend's veggies tacos were also just mediocre.”
“Love the veggie options, and service has sincerely improved in the past year (nothing to complain about in the past 6 months, and my boyfriend and I go there at least 2x a month).”
“If you want a chill night with some food and good drinks, I would recommend this place.”
“Despite the great food, I will never return.”
“And service is bad here.”
“It can also get quite expensive if you order a couple of drinks and food.”
“did order another drink and it didn't take quite as long, but all of the tables around us waited for their drinks for just as long as we did, if not longer.”
Service? What Service?.
This place has the worst service. I'm never going back. After waiting for 30 minutes on a round of drinks. I let the floor manager know the drinks took quite awhile. Her response "I'm not your waitress"
I also need to mention here, the floor manager is also a co-owner. Get it together ladies, your people skills are pathetic. My friend had to get up and find the waitress to place her order. The bartender who was so slammed was outside smoking leaving no one behind the bar. It's Williamsburg on a weekend... maybe more than one person behind the bar?
The same floor manager/owner saw it fit to add a gratuity to my bill.
WOW, Terrible Service. Despite the good food, it is REALLY not worth coming in. The service is appalling. They basically ignore you and you have to ask to be seated, for your order to be taken, for everything! You have to wave your arms and try to flag them down. And when you do ask for things, they never come. Why bother being in the service industry if you're incompetent at it? If you don't want to serve people, then don't run a sit-down restaurant.
Unbelievably bad service. I am a server, so I tend to understand if service is bad sometimes--there are situations that are not in the staff's control. But my experience here was appalling. Despite the great food, I will never return. It took 5-10 minutes for someone to even acknowledge our presence at the door, and the restaurant was far from full. In fact, I wondered if we were supposed to seat ourselves, except that there was sign in the front that instructs guests to wait to be seated. Perhaps we should have known to walk out then, but like I said, I understand that restaurants can't be perfect all the time. We must have sat for another 25 minutes before my friend was able to flag a staff member down to take our order. There was a man and a woman. The man at least tried a little, but the woman was seriously incompetent. She couldn't carry more than two plates at a time and moved as slow as a slug. She never came to our table, although she did go to the tables next to us. We couldn't figure out why--we're quiet, polite, not particularly offensive-looking. My friend asked her for sugar for her coffee, and she never came back or realized that she had forgotten. She drank iced coffee at the bar and moved incredibly slowly around the dining room, doing one task at a time. They never gave us chips and salsa, although the table next to us had it. The horchata I ordered was undrinkable, almost like they accidentally dumped way too much cinnamon in it and then were like "oh well maybe she won't notice." But since no one came to the table after dropping the drinks, I was stuck with it until they showed up with the food another 20-30 minutes later. When our food came, we were relieved that it was delicious, although the potatoes were cold. My friend asked for hot sauce, to which the man replied vaguely about finding it. He returned with it long after we'd finished eating and then put it on the table, saying something like "at least you can look at it now." This is a true story.
Great food - despite bad apple. let me say up front that my roommate an love this place. i've been eating here on nearly a weekly basis for 2 years, it's one of our favorite spots in the neighborhood. recently they've a new woman answering the phone who, no matter how nice you try to be, is ALWAYS rude and unpleasant. i hope she's only temporary - she's really ruining the place for us, and probably for many others too.
wait until you faint.
Despite the decent quality of the food, i will NEVER eat here again. I've had ridiculously slow delivery to the point of cancelling the order, and now i am surely at my wits end after just waiting for an hour for a salad to carry-out. What makes this worse is the rude unsympathetic snotty staff members.
My boyfriend has had horrible daytime delivery experiences during the week, and has had staff terribly rude to him on the phone when he calls to check on his order. He refuses to order from them or go there anymore. I've had other friends also give up on taco chulo, and I am now with them on that.
not bad. the place looks ok, but nothing special at all. the food is also average but at least i know the effort is there to make it from good quality ingredients.
not that great.
I wanted to give this place a fair chance, because I love mexican,
but it just was not that spectacular. My friend got a very good black bean soup, but that was the best thing on the table.
They overwrapped my burrito so that getting through the tortilla was just way too much effort. It was also just average, spicy, but I had had better. My friend's veggies tacos were also just mediocre. The plus beside the soup was that they did have tofu sour cream and veggie options if you're into that. I did not think it was over priced, but there is better mexican in this hood.
Nothing was wrong with the service and the place was huge and empty, but i see why it was empty.
I do not think I will return.
pricey and flavorless. they charged $5 for chips and salsa, but did not tell us. they brought them out and surprised us when we looked at the bill. the margaritas were ok, but not great. the food was not filling. they put potatoes in the burritos, and they do not belong there. the taste was bland an even the spicy salsa lacked flavor. the only redeeming quality of this place is their staff who were polite and friendly, but their service could not make up for the food.
Good Burritos. POOR service..
I liked this place because they have really good, interesting burritos AND they aren't afraid of a little Velveta on the nachos.
However, the service was really really bad. Not that they weren't trying. There was one waitress and one bartender, and the place is huge. Even though it wasn't totally full, the waitress had to RUN around the restaurant, and the drinks and the food took a LONG time to arrive.
I would definitely give it another try, but they need to hire some more people.
Yummy Tacos and Tamales. A great addition to Williamsburg. Very friendly owners and hit the spot mexican food at a reasonable cost. Casual atmosphere. A little astere for my taste but definitely well done. Not a hole in the wall. The tamales were a special so I'm not sure if they always have them but well worth asking for. A couple tacos was a good size meal. They are stuffed with interior style mexican goodies. Great place to bring a big group late at night. Not trendy like Bonita so you don't have to wait. Seems to have a full bar too.
