What People Are Saying About Brooklyn Fish Camp

The Scene
Brick walls, tin ceilings and vintage black-and-white photos of a real fish camp in Florida retain the mess-hall chic of the original West Village location. On the spacious back patio, impeccably behaved toddlers nosh on pricey fish sticks alongside Brooklyn Industry-outfitted hipsters. The friendly service matches the environs.

The Food
When the original Mary's Fish Camp opened in 2001, lobster rolls were limited to the lore of New England weekenders. But it's obvious why this rendition--with just the right amount of mayo and accompanied by a heaping plate of matchstick fries--help turned the dish into a trendy catch. Other items get the same simple but savvy treatment: Succulent oysters arrive with three dipping sauces, including fresh horseradish, the deep fried rouget merits meticulous bone picking, and the bouillabaisse broth matches fiery undertones to its bounty of ocean flavors. Finish with the hot fudge sundae: The price is steep, but extra spoons are free.

I've been to to this restaurant twice. The first time the food was delicious, but the service was painfully slow. The 2nd time I called in a take-out order: Do you have lobster rolls today? Yes. I'll take 4. No problem. Come by in 20 minutes to pick them up. 20 minutes later: Oh, a guest who was eating in ordered 4 lobster rolls, and since yours were the only 4 we had left, we served them to our sit down guests. Enough said.

Both lunch and dinner are pretty good values as far as seafood goes. Once I ordered lobster roll but they brought me lobster - they brought it back and then I got the lobster roll without much of a problem. I always found the service good, even thought they seem short-staffed, especially for lunch.

I've been a few times, and in terms of taste, I have not had a bad meal. With that sad, it is overpriced. They use classic restaurant food cost trickery - the dish you receive is VERY light on the protein, and VERY heavy on the accompanying side dish. You'll get a small piece of fish, and a PILE of frieds, or salad, or veggie to have the appearance of a big meal. When in reality, you are paying a lot of money for VERY little fish. I've worked in restaurants for years which is how I know this. There is no other fish place in the neighborhood, and it is tasty, but be prepared to overpay.
