Editorial Review for Hop Devil Grill – by Katie Heffernan
The Scene
This yellow-stucco, Southwestern-style pub stays far away from devilish revelry or a hopping, crowded scene, despite touting almost 100 beers. The mostly 30-something set loosens up to classic rock tunes without getting too crazy. The tidy space allows ample lounging in big cherry-stained booths, at sidewalk tables or at the long bar and its separate island.
The Draw
With so many poisons to pick, it's surprising the place stays so sober. An impressive international beer collection bristles from 24 taps, drawing on 13 countries from Germany to the Netherlands to Japan. Stand-out stouts like Anderson Valley Oatmeal progress along the bar wall to 35 whiskeys--single malts to sour mash. The specialty bar next door features a fridge-full of Belgian Trappists and other rarities. A full menu of pub classics like barbecue and burgers tides over drinkers looking to dine.

Honestly this was the worst bar experience I have ever had. The beer selection was fairly promising, but beyond that, we had the worst mussels ever (over cooked, stringy, and the dish even had shells in it- as in seashells), were given dirty plates, and the only bread available is doused in paprika. Because the food was so bad, we just mentioned to the waitress to let the chef know that he is overcooking his food. The manager then appeared and offered us a free round (that was not our intention, but it was a nice gesture), but the offer never materialized. The management is rude and cares very little about customer service. In New York, you should not have to put up with this kind of blatant disregard from a restaurant- there are plenty of other great bars in the area- don't waste your time here.
Pros: nice waitresses (trying to make up for management's rudeness)
Cons: bad service, bad food, terrible value
