Editorial Review for Shake Shack – by Katie Heffernan

The Scene
Restaurateur Danny Meyer fashioned this alfresco burger joint as a retro urban retreat. Resting beneath a leafy canopy of trees, the shiny shack's pick-up window, smiling service and "soda pop" marquee recall 1950s chic. New Yorkers of all sorts fill the spread of green fold-up tables--and spill to surrounding park benches. Its popularity means the line can sometimes stretch to the park's southeast entrance.

The Food
This throwback joint relives the heyday of the hamburger. The delicacy's doughy potato bun catches drippings from the juicy sirloin-brisket patty and Shack sauce, a creamy mayo-based fixin' secretly seasoned. Vienna beef hot dogs--like the Taxi with a mess of tomato-simmered onions and sauerkraut--are pure Chicago-style. For burger or dog, the golden crinkle-cut fries provide a crisp accompaniment and St. Louis-style frozen custards a perfect ending. The mix of caramel, chocolate and toffee in the Hopscotch is a chunky, velvety reward.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

Make it even more all-American with naturally sweet, homemade lemonade or a beer (or half-bottle of wine). But be sure to keep alcohol in the restaurant's seating area.

The Extras

Vegetarians can get greasy, too. The tasty 'shroom burger's portobello patty is muenster-stuffed and deep-fried.

Know Before You Go

Dogs are welcomed with the "Pooch-ini," a frozen custard, peanut butter and dog biscuit dessert.

When to Go

Shake Shack is open year-round, with a three week closure over the winter holidays.

Enjoying this beautiful October weather, the Shake Shack is a great choice for a delicious for an alfresco dinner in the heart of NYC. Shack-toberfest is offering additional beers as well as sausage/bratwurst options. The hopscotch is delicious, as well as the shack burgers and cheese fries. Definitely a must-try.

Pros: Brugers, fries, shakes

Cons: long wait -but worth it!

My date and I went there this past Saturday because we had heard so much about it from our friends and from various websites. We wanted to see what the hype was all about. When we got there, the line was fairly long, but not as bad as we had thought it would be. We waited in line for approximately 25 minutes and placed our orders. We ordered two single stack burgers, an order of fries, and a drink. We sat down in the restaurant eating area while waiting for our order. The seating area of the restaurant is actually inside the park and very relaxing. The "restaurant" was also very clean and family friendly. It is definitely a place I would go if I just wanted to enjoy the great weather and scenery. Our buzzer shook after 5-10 minutes to notify us that our order was ready. There is a condiment stand right by the place where you pick up your orders so that customers would be able to get different condiments and utensils to eat there or to take out. It was all very convenient and organized. After getting our condiments, utensils, and napkins, we went back to our table and took a bite of the burger. It was MOUTHWATERINGLY delicious. I am literally salivating just thinking about the Shake Shack burgers. It was THAT good. The fries were also very good and we definitely had an excellent experience. It is definitely WORTH THE WAIT and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to any of my friends, relatives, strangers, etc.!

Pros: DELICIOUS burgers, Scenery

Cons: long wait
