In Short
A friendly cafe with a leafy outdoor garden and a cramped record store with crate after crate of rare vinyl? Yes, this small Greenpoint cafe/record shop has everything its caffeinated, obscure music-listening patrons could ever need. Weathered hardwood floors, art-adorned walls and the constant clicking of laptop keys gives the space a warm, comfortable feeling. The records skew towards old-school and obscure rock from bands like MDC, Sonic Youth and Fly Ashtray, while the cafe serves up espresso drinks, tea, sandwiches, pastries and brunch on weekends, along with free Wi-Fi.
Hits: Music nerds can count on a knowledgeable staff, while those without an encyclopedic knowledge of rock can still enjoy the free Wi-Fi and outdoor patio.
Misses: The shop's narrow interior means you might have to squeeze by browsing record buyers to order your espresso.

i love this place. normal american food served hot in a grungy atmosphere. in other words-where has this place been all my life? I never want to see another fennel and blue cheese omelet in a crate and barrel looking place again-you know what I mean? when did the world get so bland and horrible. why don't more people open places like this? oh yeah because NY is for Rich people now. thats too bad, and while I wish the guy making the coffee here played good music more often-instead of what is interesting ---it is still a welcome relief to all the hip and horrible and ridiculous restaurants that are crowded and loud and serve mediocre food. Eat a goddamned american cheese and egg sandwich on some decent bread for 5 bucks-it actually will make you happy,

Eat Records is more of a defensive clubhouse than a store that'd be open for business to the public like a normal establishment. I've had some of the rudest service in my life there recently. I live in the neighborhood and actually care about cool obscure music but I still apparently didn't pass the test to NOT be treated like dirt. I blame one employee in particular for that experience -- other employees have been perfectly nice. My other gripe is that the cafe is almost always closed for random, undisclosed reasons. Todd P, a local show promoter, seems to run his business from Eat Records' counter, making it a prime spot to get your high demand rockshow tickets. The people who run the shop are also involved with East Village Radio. Local bands like Japanther and Parts & Labor make up the shop's social circuit. There are a couple tables in front for laptopping and loitering... and an adorable garden in back that's pretty much going to waste. Mostly, it's just got a lot of used records for sale. PROS: Cool records CONS: Cold rude independable service

After new ownership by three young individuals , a year ago, Eat Records really is growing a great reputation. The store has a limited amount of CDS, but includes a lot of local NYC music, there is actually a local section in the store. There is also a coffee shop, run by Molly, in the back of the store. Great place to hang and buy music.
