Editorial Review for Moonshine – by Kara Zuaro
The Scene
This homey, wood-paneled dive looks like it was airlifted from a sleepy Southern town and plopped down upon Brooklyn's outer reaches. A friendly bartender offers some of the cheapest brews in the city, and the liquor cabinet is stocked for shots. A pair of bulldogs patrol the joint and an old-fashioned Pabst plaque suggests to the mostly male clientele, "Next time, bring your wife."
The Draw
If you come to Moonshine often enough, everybody knows your name--or at least can match your smile to a Polaroid picture tacked to the frequent customers wall. Regulars shoot pool or animated deer (on the Buck Hunter game), and choose their favorite Patsy Cline, Hank Williams Jr., or Replacements tunes on a stellar country-rock jukebox. Unless a local bluegrass band is stopping by, the upright piano is open to amateurs and the backyard barbecue has a BYOM policy (Bring Your Own Meat).

On the MenuThis is a whiskey bar, folks. There are about 50 bottles to choose from. There are also around 20 twelve-ounce beers available.
Save MoneyDrink specials are centered around PBR. Five dollars buys you a bucket of four cans or a "James Gang," a shot of Jim Beam and a beer.
The ExtrasThis bar is outfitted for a super barbecue--not only do they have two gas grills, but a smoker as well, plus plates, condiments and plastic ware if you need 'em.

Moonshine is unspoiled Brooklyn. Cheap beer, a BBQ grill and dog friendly -- what more can you ask for? Friendly bartenders and an interesting crowd keep this out of the way spot top of mind for us. And the remote location ensures it'll stay that way.
Pros: Cheap beer, great jukebox, dog friendly, outdoor area, free peanuts
Cons: Clientele can get a little iffy late at night

This is a great neighborhood bar. The beers are cheap, the staff is friendly, and there's a pretty big patio out back for when the weather's nice. $5 gets you a bucket of PBRs! It's a little bit of a hike from the subway, but that's probably one of the things that lets it keep that neighborhood feel.
Pros: cheap drinks, friendly crowd
Cons: kind of far from the subway
