Brooklyn >Movers Not Shakers
“They consider themselves a "flat fee" service but realy it's a box count that they are basing things on.”
“We were pretty disorganized for such a huge move, but they took our last minute crap and they did their job, and It was effortless.”

nice job. The whole world is nicer because of nice people like you! Thank you for fixing my flat tire. It was so gracious of you to take the car on short notice. Thank you also for such outstanding service. In all the years I have been with your company, you have taken such good care of me and my car.
tired, complaining movers. Movers worked until 1 am the day before, had a morning shift before me. So they were not in the mood to work when they came to my house. When I used its service the first time, they asked more money saying I had more stuff. I ended up paying 20% more. They even haggled over tips. That was unpleasant. So why use them second time? I was like throwing good money after bad. And I didn't want a headache of trying a different company since it could be worse. But this was a big mistake. I ended up paying more again. And for tips, I gave $50 for 3-hr move(including the time in traffic). But the foreman pushed it hard for more when they left my stuff outside the elevator, and my landlord and I moved everything to my apt. I get angry to think about it. They are cheap labor workers, and not professionals. The cherry-brown paints on the sides of my desk were all chafed off exposing the color of wood.
Unreliable and they try to get more money from you. Totally unreliable. They arrived nearly 2 hours late (blaming traffic -- did you know there's traffic in Manhattan??!) and then wanted to charge me more because I had more boxes than they had written down when creating the flat rate we had agreed upon. I used small boxes so I had "too many". I literally turned them away and scheduled another company to do the move. Go with Two Men and A Truck instead. $150 cheaper and scheduled for the next day!
Terrible - Stay Away. I used this company about 5 years ago - they were the absolute worst - TERRIBLE. There were 3 Russian guys and one college aged kid and the college kid was the only one that did any hard labor. We had a big move that crossed over from NY to NJ. These guy's took one break another - seriously they had a break after just 1/2 hour of work. What should have been a 5 hour move became a 12 hour move and then the rude owner wanted to charge me extra as my move was taking longer than planned. He threatened to hold my stuff hostage. I told him I was not going to pay him another penny and that I would report him to authorities. What he did to get me back was to throw in a second move right in the middle of my move. So the guy's ended up picking up a one bedroom apt. in Brooklyn and handling that move first - even though the men were already right in the middle of my move as my move began at 8 AM. If I had not had a baby 3 weeks after my move I would have spent every minute of my day putting this guy out of business. Stay away they are terrible!
CRIMINALS!! fight on the job, rude, unprofessional. every awful review i read was exactly like my experience. i wish i had more time to truly outline the horrific unprofessionalism, but this quick blurb will have to do. Trying to extort money from me, and the lies!! mark was so incredibly rude to me on the phone as well. the condescension i faced for being a young woman was truly appalling. The crew got in a fight in the truck, with the manager beating up his employee and throwing him on top of my furniture, repeatedly. everybody on my street was staring and telling me to call the cops. im a student, and they destroyed the few things i have. i will take time out of my incredibly busy schedule to let the public know how awfully this business is run, and how unprofessional this company is in every aspect. it should be criminal to run a company this terrible. these guys are crooks.
Beware. Beware, especially if you are a woman alone. I got an email confirming one price from Mark, the head of the company. We went through the list of my things at least 3 times. THe morning of the move, the movers showed up with an entirely different list, and basically, tried to extort more money from me. Conveniently, Mark, who owns the company and gave me the flat rate quote was "on vacation." At the end, my friend showed up and called them out on basically, trying to extort us for more money and they backed down. The movers themselves were good, but this is not a trustworthy company. Do not be alone when dealing with them, because they exploit- or attempt to exploit- people in stressful and difficult circumstances.
Find another mover.
I do NOT recommend this moving company. We had a terrible experience with our move in late March of this year, and would strongly advise finding another company if you care at all about your belongings, and if you'd like to keep the stress to a minimum on move day and in the months following.
After receiving a quote from Movers Not Shakers, they compromised a few hundred dollars to to match quotes we received from other moving companies. Their estimator came to our house prior to providing us with a quote to assess the move and the items to be moved. We went with them because they are a local company, and they advertise on NPR (we figured that provided some credibility).
When the moving crew arrived the morning of the move, they started the move immediately. About half way through the move, about 50% of our belongings had been taken down to the truck. The moving guys disappeared for about an hour. We found most of the movers sitting down the staircase of our building and the Supervisor was out front of my building having an argument with someone at their office.
One of the movers then proceeded to tell us our job should have been bid much higher, and it was way under bid. He then mentioned their office does this to them all of the time, and they don't make enough money. I think you'll agree this is an internal matter that shouldn't involve customers, nor effect the quality of a move a customer receives after agreeing to a price with a moving company. If their estimator didn't want to be competitive, he didn't have to bid on the job, and we would have gladly gone with another company who wanted to handle our move.
Within 5 minutes, the moving resumed, but with a totally different work ethic. The supervisor from that point on didn't say a word to us. I got a sense of attitude from the rest of the movers as well. The job at that point was dealt with on a rushed basis and I noticed very fragile pieces be handled roughly. Boxes that said "this side up" were carried upside down and furniture that we requested to be blanket wrapped was not. Upon arrival into our new apartment, many boxes were put down and stacked upside down. Boxes marked "do not top load" were stacked several high on top of each other.
What's worse is that our sofa and a desk suffered damage (amongst several smaller items), and Movers Not Shakers did not care to have either piece properly repaired for us. I was told by Mark, the owner, that we should have purchased moving insurance through a 3rd party insurer. They sent an upholsterer over to "repair" the sofa weeks later (with a piece of fabric and bottle of craft glue). After I received an estimate to repair our desk, they sent us a check for half the cost, and said they could do no more, as they would be losing $ on the move. I think we lost big time, but the owner clearly doesn't care about that.
Having moved over 20 times in my life, I have never had a move that was so frustrating and full of mishaps. This was a 10 block move...I've moved across the U.S. twice, and not had my belongings suffer any damage. I also know friends who have had furniture damaged in moves, and the moving companies they hired rectified the situation, and professionally repaired what they were responsible for damaging. This in not how Movers Not Shakers does business.
The owner of the company continued to maintain a demeanor of rudeness and carelessness through the entire process. He yelled at me, swore, and told us the moving mishaps/damages were our fault. I cannot believe with this sort of customer service that this company is even in business.
Please, save yourself the headache, and go with another mover. Their NPR ad slogan states they are "changing the way New Yorkers feel about moving". Unfortunately, they are not changing it for the better.
I moved with this company on the first of May, and boy was that a mistake. Heard about them on WNYC so I thought they came highly recommended. They're "green!" They do flat rates! Great!
First of all, when I told them how much stuff I had, they gave me an estimate of bins that they said was "more than enough." They arrived to drop them off at the appointed time. It immediately became clear that there weren't going to be enough of them. So the next day I had to order more. A lot more. They arrived about an hour late for their appointment to drop THOSE off and informed me I was being charged more (even though they were the ones who screwed up the estimate).
Moving day. Move scheduled for 1 pm. My movers showed up at 3:45. Maybe closer to 4. I got one call, around 2, saying they were running a little late because someone had more stuff than anticipated and more flights of stairs than anticipated (um, aren't you supposed to KNOW THIS STUFF in advance? You ask these questions right on your website). When I tried to call back around 3, the guy's phone was shut off.
My team of movers showed up, finally, after I'd been cooling my heels in my packed-up, hot apartment for hours. The head guy, clearly annoyed and exhausted, and his team of five guys who were "brought in at the last moment" (clearly, the buddies of one of the two ACTUAL MOVING PROFESSIONALS who were doing the move). The head guy didn't speak Spanish and the majority of the "crew" didn't speak Engligh. Which works tremendously well for a) a coordinated move and b) my bins getting into the rooms I'd labeled on the tops. Nobody seemed to know what the F they were doing with the exception of Vinnie. That dude was super strong, and nice. He is the only reason I'm giving this company ANY stars.
When we got to the new place, I was told that the guys needed a pizza break. Cue another half hour of waiting around for that. Plus, the head guy's co-worker from the company showed up in ANOTHER truck, done with his own jobs, and parked across the street. Just to hang out and wait for him to finish. I'm sure my new neighbors across the street were psyched about THAT. (Side note: my stuff was moved in a Budget rental truck. Hardly the "biodiesel" vehicle promised on the site.)
All in all, the worst move I've ever had, and I have moved a lot, and with a bunch of low-budget companies. When I left a message informing the owner, Mark, of all of this, I kind of expected a profuse apology and a reduction in my rate for the incredibly crappy service. Instead I got an angry phone call from him: a litany of excuses for everything that I just listed above, a refusal to take responsibility for any of it, and a last ditch offer to "send [me] a check for a hundred dollars." Implying it was not a refund but a payoff for not, say, writing a bad review online. Um, whatever. I'd rather get the word out. Movers Not Shakers are the WORST. AVOID AVOID AVOID.
Wonderful experience with my move.
I read the moving stories below, and I have to say, Im surprised.I decided to write a pretty long review, because i feel these reviews have been a bit unfair. My experience with Movers not Shakers was amazing-and this was the second move they had handled for me.
We were moving overseas, and had to have a fifth floor walk-up emptied of years of stuff and repacked into a tiny container, parked in the middle of the street, the day after Thanksgiving. I cannot tell you how worried we were as the moving day approached-would they show up? what would they break? Would we have any money left? We had used Mark before for a smaller move, which went well, but this time, he surpassed all expectations.
We used them for everything- for the packing, crating, loading-everything. We were pretty disorganized for such a huge move, but they took our last minute crap and they did their job, and It was effortless.I was sure that our stuff wouldnt fit, other movers had told us so, and refused to do a 20 foot container which was what we could afford. Mark came, he saw, and and he fit EVERYTHING we owned into the container through careful packing and total attention to each fragile item. Two months later, we are overseas, we've unpacked and NOT ONE item they packed and put in the container has been broken/damaged. In fact, we even crated our TV and electronics/mirrors with these guys, and a friend who paid four times as much for crating via fedex ended up with rubble.
Mark is no nonsense, but im assuming if you speak like a person and not a "busy doctor" with him, he will be polite with you. He was a gentleman with me, and the quote was extremely reasonable and based on a home inspection-i strongly urge you to do this additional step so you both know how many people and how many boxes will in fact be needed. Also, get the quote in writing, which Mark was more than happy to do, and which he honored.
Its silly to think a phone quote will be binding when the movers arrive and its five times the amount because you were "considerate" and packed lightly but with more boxes. And as far as tips go-I think for a 1000 dollar move, paying four guys 40 bucks each for a job well done is kind of standard-you tip a waiter 15% at a $200 dinner for telling you the fish is good-these guys do the labor and should be acknowledged for some serious back breaking work which you now are not performing.
I would be more than happy to recommend them highly. I suggest if something bugs you, you immediately report anything untoward to the owner, Mark. Good luck! Thanks for reading.
The Best Movers in Brooklyn.
Movers Not Shakers moved me today and were incredible. They delivered the boxes according to schedule (5 days in advance) and were on time for the appointment for moving. The movers wrapped stuff professionally and with care. They respected labels and placed boxes in appropriate rooms, as well as taking plastic and quilts off all big furniture.
The move was fast, but quality. I would highly recommend them again for any move.
