The Scene
This laid-back, 5,000-square-foot watering hole isn't meant to make Taaffe Place the next Bedford Avenue. The folks who work here are more interested in attracting the long-term residents of Clinton Hill than the transient Pratt set. But with cheap eats, gigantic margaritas and a tiny library, stocked with Kant, Chomsky and Nabokov, the art students can't stay away.
The Draw
In the tremendous basement, mod furniture and groovy chandeliers conjure up a retro-futuristic look, perhaps inspired by the style that was considered space-age when Sputnik was launched in 1957. A large gallery space hosts shows from local artists, and a mid-sized stage features an array of live music (blues, funk, rock and hip-hop) and an occasional burlesque performance.

My favorite thing about Sputnik are the teenage rock bands in the basement alongside the indie film festival programs. A $3 cold Pabst tallboy can't be beat in this neighborhood and they have good New York bar food like the hummus platter. Yum!

The editorial review calls it a 'chilled out lounge.' When Sputnik is at its best, it is that - a great space, quirky/hip decor, cheap eats and a mellow vibe can be found about HALF the time when I visit Sputnik. The other half of the time you'll either find A. the music too loud and metal/thrasher rock oriented to really enjoy a conversation, beverage, snack, or even 10 minutes of lounging or B. The giant projection screen usually used for background screening of art house movies being used as a giant TV to show a ball game, with sound at full blast. If they could be consistent in their vibe, they'd get a consistent customer out of me!
