Message from La Caverna

La Caverna

Unique underground waterfall. Great cocktails, food, music and décor.

  • Variety of cocktails
  • Authentic Italian cuisine
  • Unique cavelike atmosphere

Is it serendipity or the miracles of Friendster that just as the hags of winter wheeze their frosty sorrows, several of my lifer-single friends have met a special someone? Let Cupid's annual visit mock us not, now that we have someone to help us warm the bed and brave the cold.La Caverna, the Lower East Side's romantic, fun, and funky cave bar.Like a portal into a Flintstones happy-hour hideaway, the humongous room is a man-made cave complete with stalactites and waterfalls. Wooful ambient lights warm and twinkle the many makeout nooks and crannies frame by wooden tables and large leather couches. The drinks are strong and well made by a friendly and accommodating staff. With regular Dj spinning and plenty of room for parties, the vibe shifts nightly. The overall effect is exoctic, slightly over-the-top on a vegas kind of way,and un-like anything you've ever seen on the Lower East Side

Editorial Review for La Caverna – by Justin Hartung

The Scene
After entering through a rather ordinary front door, turn the corner to descend a down a flight of stairs into a subterranean space that is--literally--cavernous. Once adjusted to the dim lighting, you'll behold imported rocks that cover every inch of the walls, stalactites, fossil imprints, a gurgling fountain and, naturally, a DJ setup. After a couple glasses of wine, you might think you've stumbled into the underground city from the "Matrix" movies.

The Food
The over-the-top décor's certainly the reason to visit La Caverna, as the food is rather ordinary. An unsurprising selection of Italian staples is given standard treatment. Appetizers are the safest bet, including a bountiful calamari plate or the appropriately earthy mushroom polenta. Entrees, however, can be oversalted, especially the otherwise decent lobster ravioli. The homemade desserts, such as a light-as-air tiramisu, fare much better.

I agree with other reviewers. It is true that this place can be irritatingly crowded. However, I always have a really good time here. Pretty decently mixed, diverse, and managable clientele. Some cute girls. Sorry, I wasn't paying too much attention to the guys. Music is not the best but good to dance to. Drinks are strong. Bartenders are friendly and good looking, and somehow manage to keep your booze flowing constantly despite serious overcrowding around the bar. Extra points for friendly bouncers.

Pros: Staff Thumbs up.

Cons: Not a whole lot really. Crowded.
