“The wine list is full of interesting and unique wines, and the descriptions provided in the menu are spot on.”

“We were a little frustrated that it took a long time to be seated, and then when we were seated the service was slow, but the food made it all worth it.”

Super Solid Neghborhood Option. We find this place to be a first class local option of an evening. Wine list is decent (the Tuesday night 50% wine night is nothing to sniff at) and the pastas are always enjoyable. The specials are often tasty too althought there is is the ubiquitous tendency of these places to have $12 plates across the board then specials just happen to be $25, and they don't post the prices - slightly annoying having to ask - will the fish special require a trip to the ATM- nice people and sold italian food - in the hood.
Terrific, fresh Italian food. This is another fantastic neighborhood spot. The food is almost always amazing, and they pride themselves on fresh, true Italian cooking. The tilapia entree is awesome, and so are any of the risotto dishes. The only drawback is the service, which is less than stellar. It can sometimes take the waitstaff more than 20 minutes to take your order! Still, I recommend it because of the food.
It's a shame..
When this place 1st opened the food was perfect, the service was great and the atmosphere was warm.
Having relatives in Carroll Gardens my wife & I have eaten here many times as well as Casa Rosa, Marco Polo and the Red Rose - just to name a few.
It seemed at 1st that the owners (although NOT Itailan) tried to make this place a REAL desitnation for good food and good wine. We were even invited to their 1st year ann. gathering - that's how often we used went.
However, once the co-owner (from Queens) went on to manage one of their other restaurants (the new manager brags about them having 4 or 5) the food and service is NOt the same. If you go for lunch paln on the snotty hosttess to not bother with you or even care if you're breathing. If you go for Dinner plan to wait & wat & wait. It seems the place has become a yuppie hangout - the owners love the fact that tables of 6 & 8 order bottles upon bottles on wine 9the wine is priced well) and drink all night and perhaps share 1 or 2 entrees. This is probably why they don't care how greasy the food has gotten, how dirty the tables have gotten and how bad the service has gotten. It's a shame!
Excellent food, but terrible service.
On my second trip to Fragole, I was seduced by the food but appalled by the service. The hostess was extremely indifferent to the fact that although we were told it would be 20 min wait for a seat, we ended up waiting 45 min for a table. No apologies, no comps, no nothing. She didn't say one word to us when she eventually seated us. Also, my husband and I felt as if we were treated differently becuase we don't look like big spenders.
This is the second time we have experienced deplorable service, and I think that next time I'm in the mood for authentic Italian, I'm going to head to another area restaurant.
Great Food, Dismal Service.
We used to go to Fragole, on average, twice a month (it's around the corner from our apartment). The food's generally tasty (and hearty!), but the service is increasingly indifferent. When we first started going almost 2 years ago, the service was lovely - charming but not intrusive. Now, consider yourself lucky if your water is refilled without your having to flag down a waiter - same goes for getting your bill, ordering dessert, etc.. Last time I went with a group of friends, everyone got their entrees a good 10 minutes before mine arrived with no explanations or apologies.
Fragole always used to be our first choice for a date night or a night out with a group of friends - now, I go out of my way (literally) to avoid it.
Best casual Italian in Brooklyn. Delicious food in a warm, cozy environment. The meat lasagna is AMAZING, always. It's a relaxed, casual atmosphere, and the staff and owners are friendly and provide excellent service. Sometimes the place is packed, but it's worth the usually short wait. The wine list is full of interesting and unique wines, and the descriptions provided in the menu are spot on. If you're looking for a white tablecloth kind of place, this is not it...and that's part of the reason I love it and am there almost once a week. Even if it wasn't a neighborhood spot for me, I'd go out of my way to be a regular.
great service, AUTHENTIC food. service was excellent - smiles the entire time and nice, subtle recommendations. excellent wine recommendation, too. the meal was completely authentic as well. i have lived in Italy (primarily sicily) and have to say that Fragole is much closer to a 'normal' restaurant over there than marco polo or any of the other italian places in the area. the atmosphere is totally without pretension as well. prices were maybe not too cheap, but if youre going out for dinner, what the hell, right?
Grazie Fragole. for being three blocks from my house...the lasagna is sublime as is the char-grilled calamari appetizer and the pollo alla milanese. Honestly I have never had a bad meal at Fragole (and I am an Italian girl who knows how to cook Italian food). They have a lovely wine list, the service is charming, the room is very nice and the prices are reasonable. Maybe that last reviewer went on some random off night. I have never heard anyone have anything but great things to say about Fragole. When we have guests in town and don't know where to go, Fragole is always our safe bet.
Don't go. Seriously.. My husband and I went for Dine In Brooklyn and got the prix fixe. We called in advance and were told that even with a reservation we'd probably have to wait anyway, but when we showed up the place was practically empty. We ordered a skirt steak, medium-well, and a rainbow trout. The skirt steak arrived uncooked on the inside and charred on the outside. The trout was also charred, and smothered in mushroom sauce-- barely recognizable. The waitstaff chatted at the bar amongst themselves and completely ignored us for the entire meal-- which took some work, as the place is small enough with the garden closed! Two out of the three desserts on the prix fixe were unavailable, and their replacements were lame pastries from the bakery down the street. We should have ordered the homemade pasta, because that *might* have compensated for the terrible service.
Best Italian in Italian neighborhood.. Excellent in every way! Food is delicious, waitstaff is "on it" and the atmosphere is cozy but exciting. I found it very child friendly. My picky 8 year old will eat everything on the menu, because the food is just that good. For dessert, the waiter even brings out the cheese filled pastry tube, and she gets to fill the cannoli herself! We can expect a perfect time, go early to avoid the mix of very hip and locals crowding in.
