Good to go if you haven't....
This place changed quit a bit since I first started going there over 3 years ago.
At first it was mostly a lot of neighborhood people. You had the old timer hispanics sitting at the bar with you taking a few back. You had the in the know, usually hispanic as well, that danced their asses off. It used to be unpretentious and easy to walk into.
Over the years the door policy got stricter and more selective. On a weekend night a group of guys will not be let in. The door guys could and will give you attitude and it gets way too crowded in any case. It's popularity has definitely affected the quality of music played there, not for the good though. There's alot more reggaeton than there used to be.
The capetas are great though.
Not knowing their past, you are surely to experience something different.
CALIENTE!. I was pleasantly surprised by this place. It was well worth the 12 block walk from the subway. A great mix of music and an eclectic crowd; the vibe was great.
You'll have to check this place out.... I went there last Friday night with a few friends of mine and had a BLAST!!! Well.. It was kind of difficult to find it but at the end it was worth it. Once we passed thru a heavy wooden front door - we were simply blown away! The crowd, well I think it's better to say - THE CROWD - was amazing!!! Very chilled, friendly and beautiful people all around. No bottles, no hassle, no $12 vodka-tonics. The DJ, accompanied with live percussion, simply created the best party atmosphere I've ever experienced. The music was amazing - predominantly latin with some elements of african tribal beats and samba. Everybody was having fun and dancing all over the place. -- Like I said - you have to check this place out - you wouldn't be disappointed! Guaranteed.
User review by reddpl7. This place belongs on top of NY's best bar list and can fit in anywhere with the hippest bars in the Meatpacking. The people that come here are from all walks of life, all sexualities, all backgrounds, yet they all unify and leave their egos at the door when they come here. The music here is mostly world music and you will not hear any remixes or popular music here. The staff is friendly, the people here great, drinks are well prices (most are $6), yet this place is one of the best and coolest around. It's located literally under the Williamsburg bridge in a neighborhood that is almost abandoned which makes it this little secret. The place has a great downstairs as well as a lively upstairs where people dance. Tables are all along the wall that are removed past a certain hour to make room for everyone dancing.
Cornucopia of sounds!.
I've been to the well known (and nicely packed) Friday and Sat Latin / Brazilian parties but was also amazed by the Sunday night events (Groove something???) . The energy of the music also promotes hip shaking and the BEMBE good time vibe, but with a totally different style than the rest of the weekend. After a few mojitos we were up dancing to Afro-Beat, Broken-beat, deep house, a little hip-hop and 1970's Fania All-Stars type of salsa. This was definitely a refreshing change up from the commercial Manhattan clubs and the less diverse Williamsburg scene on the north side of town.
I like latin music, but I love the fact that BEMBE now has something for everybody on the weekends.
it's wassup!. i just have to say cute bouncers and really good mojitos! i went with my brother who had just gotten back from iraq and i was soo happy that i got to take him there and show him a good time. he had such and excellent time and loved the music, drinks and vibe. so overall i had a great experiance there and my brother is taking a great story back overseas with him!
dope spot!.
...one of the best spots i have been to in brooklyn or nyc!. beautiful women. amazing drinks that are reasonably priced. always a dope selection of music. live percussion sets late in the week. everyone is always cool and no pretentious 'scene' freaks. the bartenders are always cool. and the design and feel of the place is like being at home... during the week it is the best spot to meet a new friend.. very mixed open minded crowd.. easy to sit and talk with anyone.
.. everytime i go out i end up here cause' there aint' no other spot like it.
... from the outside it is not easy to find..sorta covert- it is a corner building - gota look for a blue light.........no doubt it is worth it!
a great place.
Good luck finding it, but if you do ... you are in for a good time. Great place, always awesome friendly crowd. World Music ... great sound system. Great drinks. Must have been there a dozen times or more and never dissapoints.
The best place to fall back on after trying some new lame flavor of the month place in the city that tries too hard.
Long live Bembe !!!
