The Scene
If Balthazar spawned a small child, it would look like Belleville, with its tin ceilings, tiny-tiled floors, bar back glittering with wine glasses, and enormous distressed mirrors scribbled with plats du jour. Although the environs are tres Francais, the crowd, with its briefcases and baby strollers, couldn't be more Park Slope. Casual, conversation-packed meals unfold easily, despite the shiftless service.
The Food
Bistro menus like Belleville's are the French equivalents of American diners'--they're homey and satisfying, but no one expects flawless food. Rustic dishes, like bracingly fresh fish soup with piquant rouille and rich, prune-stuffed pork terrine, fare better than upscale attempts, including well-cooked citrus shrimp with shaved fennel. Seasonings are intense: The grilled olive-caper-crusted tuna is balanced, but rotisserie organic lamb is studded with fresh garlic and oregano. Fondue, replete with bread cubes and steamed vegetables, is fun to share, but you'll want to horde the ice creams, particularly the creamy pistachio.

I really enjoy my time at Belleville. The food is delicious (the hanger steak is exceptional!) and the staff is very nice and friendly. Their prices are wonderful and I recommend the ever-changing pre-fix dinner. I spent my Valentines Day here and had a great time.

...and one of the best in New York! Fabulous food, fun hip atmosphere. great wine list. We felt like we were in Paris. Been there over 12 times and each time we discover something new we love. The Fresh daily made pate is a must, and the desserts, my husband and I can't pass them up...they are so french, light and wonderful. We heard they were opening a wine and tapas bar. We can't wait Monique & Guy

Returned after not having been for at least a year or more and it's still great! Needed a quick light meal after a day of shopping and having had a late lunch. We shared a salad and each had entree's. DW had the scallops and I had the skate. Amazing perfecty cooked full of flavor and very nicely plated. A bottle of wine and we were all set. Both of us saying we couldn't believe we waited so long to return. We'll be back sooner rather than later. Also felt the prices were very reasonable.

What to Drink:
In keeping with the bistro motif, wines are affordable whether ordered by the glass or the bottle. A spicy $23 bottle of Cahors pairs well with most of the menu.
