Editorial Review for Downtown Atlantic Restaurant & Bakery – by Erin Behan
The Scene
Downtown Atlantic takes pride in being part of the "other" downtown--downtown Brooklyn. Black-and-white photos of the area from a bygone era warm the rather suburban decor. Neighborhood folks looking for a safe, leisurely lunch or dinner spread throughout the wood-heavy dining room. Leisurely service encourages lingering.
The Food
Solid American favorites are served with upscale presentation, and few dishes deviate from the expected. Starters such as shrimp rolls and chopped salad are fresh and flavorful, if average. An appetizer of polenta with mushrooms, however, melds taste, texture and presentation--tangy dressing deftly pulls together the smoky flavors. The juicy burger (available at all hours) with a side of perfectly crisped fries beats out upscale fare like somewhat bland pork chops. Homemade desserts include light, airy cheesecake and rich chocolate mousse cake.

Insider Tips
The ExtrasThe restaurant offers free refills on sodas; the old Brooklyn soda (root beer, black cherry, cream, orange and raspberry) comes at a reasonable $1.50 a glass.
Where to SitEnjoy live jazz Friday and Saturday nights at 9pm--either in the dining room or at the bar.

Please, please stay in our good graces. Delicious food. Family friendly atmosphere. Great Value! Wonderful menu. We could linger here forever. There used to be the most amazing server named Tim who is no longer their. The current servers are a little in over their heads.. this place can be restored to its original splendor if it gets its service together. The food is always fantastic and the bar relaxed and fun!

I think this place is weird. There's a bar with TVs showing sports (not my scene), a sort of uninspiring menu, and a bakery stuffed in front. How could I have known that the food would be so FANTASTIC? Though we knew they had great cupcakes and these completely to die for little chocolate cookies, we had kind of written of the restaurant due to the standard "roasted beet salad" kind of menu. I'm so glad we ended up there by accident one rainy day. It turns out that the specials were much more interesting to me than the normal menu, and the chocolate pots de creme is completely decadent in a way that is almost inappropriate (by inappropriate I mean gaudy, and by gaudy I mean fantastic). And that standard roasted beet salad is the best one I've had... fresh, sweet, tart, and soul satisfying. Brunch is solid (go ahead and fill up on the pumpkin bread they give you to start, you can always take what you don't eat home). The service is charming, almost familial, and informal in a way that is refreshing. So, yum... it's not the place to impress out of towners, but when you just want good food without all the normal New York this 'n' that, this is the place to go.
Pros: Great specials, fantastic desserts.
Cons: hmmm... I still think the atmosphere is odd, but worth it for the food.
