The Scene
Another French bistro is the last thing this neighborhood needed, but that hasn't stopped Smith Street locals from showing up in droves. The railroad dining room, decorated with antique wine presses, distressed mirrors and simple wood tables, attracts a laid-back yet food-serious crowd. If you're feeling social, sit in the clubby bar area, where the gregarious owners chat up regulars; the wood-wrapped back room and leafy, smoke-friendly garden is more relaxing.
The Food
It's surprising just how good familiar French bistro food can be. Rich-stocked French onion soup is chock-full of caramelized onions under a bubbly blanket of cheese. Steak frites--juicy, buttery (sometimes too much so) and nicely charred--arrives with a heap of crispy fries, and homey dishes, like moist roasted rabbit in a mustardy glaze, couldn't be more satisfying. Only a loose creme brulee and uninspired cheese-charcuterie plate can stand improvement.

I do not think any of the positive reviews of this place are real! I went with 7 people to Baccus to celebrate a special occasion after work. The service was just horrible.. We also saw it was pretty bad all the way around the place. They left us at the table with no napkins, silverware, or even salt/pepper. They did not bring the menus over for over 10 mins after seating us. The waitress did not ask take a drink order, and left us for almost 15 more minutes. We asked several times of simple things, like a fork. All this can be an exception in a busy place… but we were one of two tables with customers! It is just as well, as the food was subpar. They overcooked everything except the pomme frits, which were ok, but I 've had better. The steak, tuna, and chicken were all over done and dry. We all ordered rare and medium rare. Unanimously, we dec ided to skip dessert. My friend asked several times for milk (for coffee). I finally got up and stood next to the kitchen while the manager went downstairs to get it. He came back with a tiny little creamer (1/4 to 1/3 cup) of milk- for 8 persons! We were then presented with a bill that added on 26% gratuity… which we refused to pay for such crappy service. My advice is to not take the chance; spend your hard-earned money elsewhere.

The great atmosphere, fun waitresses, and knowledgeable owner make this place a keeper. It's very relaxed and the staff always seems to be in a good mood. The food is delicious classic bistro fare (love the escargots and foie gras...everything that's good for you!), but if you like something a bit more unusual, the duck spring rolls, chicken roll stuffed with shiitakes, and Cajun-spiced tuna are all excellent. As for the wine...that alone is worth the trip. They don't fool around at Bacchus. It's all French regional wines, some organic, at different price points, i.e., there's a wine for everyone here. AND if you're not into wine, try the beer on tap.

My bf and I went there last Friday for a casual dinner, and it turned out that there was nothing casual about it, in a good way! The place was dimly lit and cozy. It was also very quiet when we were there even though there were about 4 other occupied tables. I ordered from the $25 prix-fixe menu and it was very worth it. I started off with escargots, lamb shank as entree and warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice-cream rolled in nuts as dessert. Everything was excellent, except maybe the side of mash potatoes which was a little watery. My bf ordered the onion soup, which was the BEST that I've ever tasted. He got the salmon linguini with a side of butternut squash-potato gratin for entree. The gratin was perfect, creamy inside but crunchy on top and bottom. We left with satisfied stomaches without a big hole in the wallet. And did I say that the waitress was very nice and friendly?!
