Editorial Review for Panino'teca 275 – by Kara Zuaro
In Short
Brick-exposed walls, attractive servers, and low lighting lend this slim cafe a romantic air. Local couples and young families slide into tightly packed tables or head to the backyard for more spacious seating. A wide selection of Italian meats and cheeses are served as antipasti or piled onto crusty paninis. Diners snack on Tuscan tomato-bread soup and bruschetta, or feast on braised pork, lasagna, and baked macaroni. Gelati, sorbetti, and classic Italian desserts like tiramisu seal the meal.

Avoid this place. Really. I've been to Paninoteca sporadically over the past couple of years. Each time, I think less of it. That said, I went with a friend on Friday to sit in the gorgeous garden and enjoy a bottle of wine and some appetizers on the first really nice day of Spring. We weren't sure if we wanted to stay for dinner, so we ordered drinks & some bruscheta, and told the waiter that we would keep one menu while we decided if we were staying. Our (Australian?) waiter politely asked if we could place our entire order at the same time. When I explained that we weren't certain if we would be staying, he let us be. I asked the (different) waiter who poured the white wine, if he could bring us a wine chiller, which he never did. Then, the scary owner referenced in other reviews came over and tried to grab the menu away, barking that they only accept "complete" food tickets in the kitchen. Incidentally, I watched this dragonlady verbally abuse other patrons while we were there. And others freely offered up their not-so-positive assessments of her "management style" based on previous encounters. Needless to say, we opted to complete our meal elsewhere. The bruscheta, by the way, was mediocre at best -- the mushrooms were actually cold (as though just taken out of the refrigerator) and the fig jam unremarkable (with skimpy anchovy portions on top).

True, the food is pretty good. Nothing amazing or worth going out of your way for, but good. However, the owner of this place is horrific! Any time I've been there she's yelling on the telephone or at her staff. I took my mother, visiting from out of town, to this place for lunch and was so embarrassed and uncomfortable-- the food was taking too long, so the owner stood there and loudly scolded the cook as though he were a child. Then, she sat at the bar and made loud phone call after phone call-- to credit card companies, vendors, etc. Basically using the dining room as her office. Made for a terrible experience-- I should have known better, since I had seen her behave that way before. Also, we sat in the garden, only to move since repairs were being done, basically on top of the table we were seated at. If you have to do repairs in the garden, don't seat people there!
Cons: kid-friendly, unprofessional owner
