The Scene – With Victorian-chintz wallpaper, stained-glass windows and mix-and-match china, this osteria looks like countless other shabby-chic and cheap Italian joints--only this one's in Prospect Heights, and owner Albano Ballerini sure is glad you came. When he's not slicing prosciutto behind the food-draped service bar, he's making the rounds with gratis tastes of wine from his native Marche region. – – The Food – The small menu is designed for sipping wine, socializing and heavy snacking, with excellent cured meat-and-cheese plates laced with wine-soaked figs.…

When my wife, who is Italian is feeling homesick this where we head. Until the kitchen opened here going out to dinner for Italian food was not an option. Home cooking was available only in our own kitchen. Thanks to the staff here, and especially Albano, we can satify our spirits and our love of food at "Aliseo." You must try it, if only to satisfy your longing for authentic Italian food

'special treat' dinner

We love good food and cook very well and elaborate ourselves, but this is where we go for that special dinner every now and then. We love the atmosphere (like sitting in someones livingroom), always enjoy the service and expert advice on what to eat and drink with it and always leave feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.
The food is exceptional in taste and very well executed (love all those different vegetable flans). The wine selection is great, we have always relied on the suggestions and we have never once had a bad one.
The squid dishes are all lovely and you have to try the stinky cheese plate, if as appetizer or as desert.
Highly recommended. We'll keep on coming back.
Oh, and we came once without a reservation, were asked to return in 20 minutes and when we did, they served us prosecco on the house to make up for the inconvenience.
Lovely, one of a kind.
The Details on Aliseo Osteria del Borgo
What to Drink:
The list is short and selective, with great values from the wine producing region known as the Marches. The full-bodied, earthy Nero d'Avola ($32-$34) from Sicily pairs well with cheeses.
Look Good:
Ballerini composes additional small and large ($14/$23) "super cheese plates" every night with hard-to-find imported artisanal cheeses, such as the herb-encrusted Brin d'Amour from Corsica.
The Extras:
Members of Slow Food (the Italian-based, international anti-fast-food group) will feel at home here: Quotes from founder Carlo Petrini are scrawled on the entrance chalkboard.
