Brooklyn >Bar Tabac
“Again, the space and vibe are pleasant, there's a fun band on the weekend.”
“The tab wasn't bad either for what we got -- wine, appetizers, entrees and a few shared desserts (plus tip) came out to about $50 each.”
“Even overpriced hotel bars don't charge $8 for a beer.”
“As a physician, I know that minimal exposure to alcohol has not been proven to be detrimental to a developing infant; however, once we brought it to the waitresses' attention, the manager got involved and kept insisting that it was "fresh fruit.”
“And they have a great Scotch and cognac and French appertif selection if that's your thing.”
“went here with a friend, being told it was a good place to eat.”
“Despite a wonderful atmosphere with live jazz and delicious food the waitstaff and manager are rude and unpleasant - I will never return.”
“The food was sublime and the service was attentive and informed.”
“Second, I love going to Bar Tabac because of the reasonable prices and great wine and cocktail selection.”
“have to say that I've been there only during brunch time but the service even though slow, it was good.”
Good atmosphere and food. I enjoyed the ratatouille and croque madame. The outdoor seating is very nice and it's very casual here.
Rude, Quality of Food is Decreasing And Don't Expect Them to Remember Your Reservation. I have never taken the time to write a review for a restaurant...until now. We went to Bar Tabac for dinner on Saturday night. We had an 8:30 reservation. We arrived right on time at 8:30 and waited for a few minutes before anyone even acknowledged our party of four. Then, after a man finally greeted us quite coldly, I explained we had a reservation. He didn't even speak to me and in a very annoyed way, grabbed their reservations book, quickly flipped through it while shaking his head back and forth. He turned to our group and said with not an ounce of apology "We have nothing right now. It will be 15-20 minutes." And then strode past us toward the back of the restaurant. He would not even stop as I tried to ask him if there was a problem with our reservation or a mistake on their end. We were so shocked to be treated so rudely with no acknowledgement of our reservation at all. No apology. We should have walked right out the door, but since every place was bound to be crowded on Smith, we decided to stay. We then ordered 4 pints of Palm Ale from the bar, but that was only after trying to order Stella Artois, which they were out of. The bartender says, "that will be $32." And I said, "wait a minute, these 16 oz pints are $8 each?" And she said, "yeah sorry about that." Stellas are $6, and she recommended a replacement that is $2 more. Even overpriced hotel bars don't charge $8 for a beer. We were finally seated and were disappointed in the service. We had to ask twice for our bottle of wine. And to top it all off, the food has really decreased in quality. Not recommended. Try any of the other great places on Smith instead.
Awful Service at Sunday Brunch..A Tried and True Favorite is Slipping.
I've been to Bar Tabac for dinner, late night, and brunch many times. The service has always been somewhat disinterested, adequate at best. But the food has been good, nice atmosphere, reasonably priced, so always worth a go. In recent months I've noticed a downturn.
Today at brunch we had a terrible experience. The food was fine, and it came promptly. But the service was awful: Our server was a distracted young woman, we didn't receive any water after asking for it, we didn't receive any sugar for the coffee after asking for it and finally had to ask the table next to us to borrow theirs. We never received any attention from the server after the runner brought out the plates. Fine, fine, whatever...one subpar service at brunch is no big deal.
But then, the capper came when the waitress--whom we hadn't seen for a very long time--came over and asked if we would vacate the table because people were waiting. We'd been at the table for a total of 40 minutes, after waiting 15 minutes ourselves. Awfully damn fast for a server to ask us to leave, as we were finishing only our second cup of coffee, that we'd only even received because we insisted on it when she brought over the check.
I replied that we'd be happy to leave, because we'd received bad service and this put the appropriate end to the meal. I complained to the manager (maybe?) on the way out the door and he responded with a boldly snotty attitude. He said he had people waiting and we needed to leave. "Maybe next time you go someplace else," he said.
Yes, sir, we will. I'd recommend others do the same.
What happened to this place?.
I agree with the downhill reviews. I also frequented this place often a for a few years. I went back after a long rest about two months ago and was very disappointed with my meal, I just let it slide thinking they were having a bad night. Yesterday I stopped in for an onion soup and a calamari salad and was so completely disgusted with my food that I paid the bill and left without even making a dent in the salad! It was so disgusting the calamari looked boiled, were huge like tires and while I was waiting (I had a table outside) the seafood delivery truck pulled up and started unloading boxes that contained Calamari from CHINA!!!! I was so grossed out at that point but when the salad arrived it was even worse. A crappy diner in the suburbs could serve a better salad! The lettuce was past freshness, the tomatoes were mealy and they threw some huge slices of onion on top, no love whatsoever! The onion soup was beyond gross, it was like dishwater with soggy onions and cheap swiss cheese that immediately turned into a rocky lump, what happened to the intensely flavored onion soup with depth of flavor topped with gruyere??? At least that's what I remember having here once upon a time.
What happened to this place? It's a real shame.
worst calamari ever!.
So, do not order the calamari the batter is worse than terrible-and I asked they are frozen from a bag with the batter. .
However the real problem here is that similar to Cubana cafe, (I beleive it is the same owner) the bill comes without the name of the restuarant on it. As we neede to expense the meal, we asked for a stamp or something on the bill to indicate where the money was spent. The owner who finally came (over from cubana cafe) to sort things out (none of the wait staff speaks english), was appaled at the request, extremely reluctant to help and acted as if it were crazy. We got into a long discussion /arguement over my request-Does he really not want to put a stamp on the reciept ? Why? What does this indicate? Does this have something to do with why they don't take credit cards?
Poor Service is ruining the reputation. It's amazing to read the two previous reviews, because my experience has been similar: I have had great night's in this place, but on dining there on a last week on a weekday night, I was greeted with a nod by the hostess which took off without talking and later claimed that she had meant that I can sit anywhere. That was followed by a similar service and she continued to walk away as she was answering questions down to the very last minute when we managed to cath her attention for the tab; I guess it must have been me and my fault for stopping there to dine.
Going down fast. I was extremely disappointed last time I went here. The manager/owner was brusque and rude both on arrival and when he asked us hurry up before our dinner and drinks were complete. While the place may be popular and gets crowded, pushing out people who have ordered a full dinner and drinks seems inhospitable. Next time I want to spend $100 on a french meal it won't be here. Food was ok but not memorable My mixed drink was low on gin and not exciting The only positive thing was the waitress who was chaming in spite of what appeared to be constant pressure/ harrasment on the part of the manager/owner.
going down hill. i frequented this resturant often years ago. the food was always consistent and the sangria is great. but ive been noticing that as much as the food is decent (as well as the price) there is something to be said about the horrible and rude service as of late. obviously this is my personal opinion (hint to the guy below.. that giving a negative review about this place doesnt mean they are lame.. its a personal point of view). This place used to have a great vibe but ive stopped coming all together b/c the host needs to get over himself.
Only go if you're not the lame type who expects the waitstaff to be your beck and call girl.
This place rocks, and please ignore the lame compaints about the service. The place is super busy, and the staff is just fine so long as you're not the kind of person who asks questions about whether the beef was fed tap water or bottled water in its youth, to substitute one lettuce for another, or mentally keeps track of which table ordered first so as know if you're being slighted by the kitchen.
It's a bistro, the food is divine, the vibe is great, and impeccable service is not the point. I'm not sure if they've really be asking the complainers not to come back, but hey--the demand outstrips the supply, so why not screen out the dbs for us all...
The worst of the worst. This restaurant had the worst service I have ever seen. The waitresses and manager are rude and don't know anything about the people skills needed to run a restaurant. I will never go there again. I went to the restaurant and found that the food was allright but the people giving you the food did not know what they were doing.
