What Our Expert Scouts Say

November 24, 2012

There are a handful of Russian restaurants, mostly in Brighton Beach and Gravesend, devoted to the art of making the various Siberian, Georgian, and Russian dumplings: pelmeni, chebureks, vareniki. Glechnik is one of the nicer ones, with big platters, cold vodka, and more than a few homey dishes to enjoy if you have any space left after eating all those dumplings.

Horrible Service, Below Average Food & Overpriced. It was a very negative Russian food experience... it looks like there are no places for good food in Brooklyn any more. Every sigle one I visit has gone bad. Glechik's food is nothing to talk about al all...t's overpriced for the quality! The servce is beyond horrible, and the owners make you pay 10% service charge on top of tip that is supposedly going to usboys b/c owners don't want to pay them, and putting this responsibility on customers. JUST A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!! is there any place that is good?

Great Russian Dining. Came here after the recommendation of a friend. The restaurant is a little cramped which is noticeable during peak dining hours but the decor and setting are cozy and very charming. It's a great place to have a nice conversation. As for the food, it was all very good and the portions were more than filling. No matter what you order, you are definitely leaving satiated. The prices are moderate mostly in the mid teens, but considering the quality and quantity of the food I consider it a great deal. The service itself was iffy and they forget to bring our order of dumplings but otherwise ok though none too friendly. Overall though the food is wonderful and definitely go if you find yourself in the area.

Horrible service, mediocre food; will never go back. I don't know where to begin; three of us went to this restaurant a couple of days ago with a friend from out of town, unfortunately, we had a horrible experience. I consider myself to be a food aficionado and have been to hole in the wall restaurants to 5 star restaurants but I have never been treated the way we were treated in this terrible restaurant. We arrived at the restaurant a little after 7 pm in a rainy and cold evening and waited by the door for almost 5 minutes but no one came to greet or even say anything at all; we just stood there by the door. Finally, we decided we would ask ourselves if there were any table available. We were told it would be approximately 20 minutes before we would be seated. By the way, none of the restaurant employees nor the owner seemed friendly, they were rather rude. So, we waited...waited for a table even though there was one open. After about 15 minutes into our wait, a group of four walked in and a young lady from the group went straight to the owner to ask for the table. The owner, without any shame or hesitation, seated them right away while we just stood there in shock and disbelief. We thought of walking out but decided to suffer this humiliation hoping the food may offset our disappointment. After about 45 minutes of wait, we were finally seated and after about another 5 minutes of wait, the owner came to take our order. We decided to start with some appetizers but all the ones that we wanted were out. So, we skipped the appetizers and ordered the main course. But all the 7 dishes turned out to be disappointing. After all the humiliation, suffering, bad taste in our mouth and complete waste of our time and money, we left the restaurant vowing never to come back again ever and prevent anyone to make the similar mistake.....

one of my favorite places. We spent many summer afternoons in Glechik, coming there right after the beach, a crowd of at least 8-10 people, with kids in tow. Never have we had a problem getting a table and the service has been oustanding despite the spilled drinks, the broken glasses, the kids rummaging under waiters' feet, etc, etc, etc. The food tastes superb, I can't even recommend a dish over the other, because no matter what you take, it's fresh, piping hot and very filling. In the winter, we started a tradition of going there every Friday for dinner, and we often do take out during the week. My kids love this place. I highly recommend it.

Great Russian Food and Terrific Value!. With three years between visits I was pleasantly surprised that Cafe Glechik is even better than I had remembered. The food is wonderfully memorable and you leave there feeling like you have enjoyed something truly unique, at a price that is reasonable. It should be a stop on anyone's visit to the Coney Island area who is looking for some great food a short walk from the bustling tourist area. Try anything on the menu, but be aware that despite the modest prices the portions are very generous! The stuffed cabbage is outrageously good, and be sure to ask for the fruit drink that seems to be on everyone's table. If you're looking for a terrific, unusual meal that won't damage the bank account, and you're not too concerned about the close quarters seating, this is a wonderful place to try.

One of my favorite places to eat in!. Glechik might be way too tiny for a restaurant by Russian standards, but it is cozy and the food is simply GREAT. You must try Odessa stew or Rabbit stew; salads-all good; and kompot is soo refreshing during the hot summer day (they make it the way my mom does, reminds me of home a lot). Another great thing about Glechik-everything is very cheap!
