Brooklyn >Slope Fitness Park Slope
“Obviously the location is great as it is right in the middle of park slope.”
“actually saw a manager yell at an employee in front of a gym full of people.”
“Great value for the money!”
great gym!. This gym is absolutely awesome! The staff is very friendly, place is emaculate, with lots of updated equipment. Very cool gym. The best in Park Slope by far!
Worst Gym Ever! Please avoid if possible!.
This gym is way way way way over priced for the location and what they give you. The managers are to busy to talk to anyone, and they are "never there." The only people who do seem like they are working are the front desk receptionists, the cleaning staff and childcare workers. I have even seen one of the managers, a women, argue with a member of the gym about money in front of people and children. Like you really couldn't take that into your office?
Just a note: This does no reflect on the personal trainers or massage people, just the price. The people are quite lovely.
Personal training sessions are way to much, $88 an hour? Please. Don't even let me get to the massages! $94 an hour? Get out of here. I know Park Slope isn't a poor community but please that is just plain robbery.
They probably don't want you to know this but membership fee is $1100, and it think its only cause of the anniversary price so its probably even more.
Last the gym is fine if you just want to work out, take a class, shower then leave. But if you want to LEAVE the gym, there is a huuuggeee problem. They charge you for a month after you sign the cancellation form and god forbid you get pissed about it because the management won't even talk to you. I've even had a supervisor hang up on me.
Beware of this gym!!!
Everybody else is nuts!!. I happen to love this place. I don't understand all the bad blood by other people. The club is clean, the staff is friendly & Iv'e never had any problems with Management. People should stop saying half truths because it's not right.
They saved my life and now they are saving my wife's. I met Renee Daniels a year and a half ago, at Seventh Heaven. After some quick body work in their booth I decided to give them a try. I have suffered for over thirty years with various back problems leading to feeling like I had electricity running down both legs and into my feet which burned constantly. Through their program of stretch and strength I was able to run with in one month, something I hadn't done in fifteen years, but the electricity is now off and I have not felt this good since my late twenties. This boutique gym has the best trainers in New York. The are now giving me back my wife who had been getting worse every year following a discectomy and fusion of two levels of her neck along with a forty degree scoliosis. She is showing great improvement for the first time after she had just about given up hope of being pain free. This is the only place that has helped and she tried everything from doctors to P/T to accupuncture etc. . This is the place if you have a problem or are just looking for a great, friendly gym.
Still going strong.
Worst gym I've ever been to!.
I don't even know how to describe my experience with these very rude and unprofessional staff, specially the manager/ owner James.
Long story short. I have a 16 month old baby now but when my son was 7 months I got robbed by one of their sitters. I left the diaper bag inside the play area with bottles ect and my wallet with a one hundred dollar bill on it. When I left the gym to go straight to the bank, the bill was not there. I am and was 100% positive about it.
Went back they fired the girl I decided to stay at the gym for 2 more months till our family moved to a new address. I left the gym had a yellow piece of paper confirming it and I was charged for a full month that I was not enrolled anymore. I tried to reach out to management by phone and in person probably 10 times with no success. I still didn't get my $100 dollars fee back. They are thiefs and disonest people. Keep distance from this illegal gym.

I am honestly not speaking from a disgruntled ex-employee stand point. I just want people to truly know what they're getting there selves into.
I spoke with numerous clients on a personal level and found that the club has raised rates on a continuous basis. This is because the management is looking to expand and needs the added capital to do so.
The Spa is a joke. It has the world of potential and I was looking forward to working with them to improve it. I really was. Each time I recommended a certain aspect in which they could make their company better it was tossed to the side.
I honestly thought that the rumors I heard of the management being shallow and unprofessional were just disgruntled customers. But they are all true. I don’t know how many times I saw someone at the front desk complaining of being over charged and demanding a refund. They are hurting for money like the woman before me said. They have taken a HUGE hit because of the recession. The owners just bought a new house and need to cover a mortgage. Just facts.
And as for the Manger stated in the comment before mine, he is the "fitness manger". I specifically remember the situation in which the woman is stating. I remember the manger with dread-locks gloating about how the woman who couldn’t do anything and that their was a clause that made it to where she couldn’t get anything in return.
He said all of this with a coy smile like "ha ha got her".
I came in on my day off and went out of my way to promote myself. I dedicated a tremendous amount of time to this establishment and was with out notice left an VOICEMAIL in forming me that my services were no longer needed at their establishment! I find this to be not only cowardly but also extremely unprofessional.
A week or so before my unfortunate firing at this gym I was brought into a room and told that a member called the owner personally to inform her that I was speaking subversive about the club and how it was operated. Does every member have the ways and means to get in touch with one of the owners when ever they need to file a complaint? If this was the fact their phone would never stop ringing! I found this hard to believe since I was as positive as positive could be for this gym. They stated that they couldn’t have people talking badly about them club at this time and that inner conflicts weren't allowed. No wonder they change employee's like underwear. But the funny thing is that they were acting on a lie established by an anonymous person. I was also told that people in the community don’t want to see their establishment succeed because of the fact that they are African American. I find this also extremely narrow minded and astonishing being that their main financial backer is a white man and the vast majority of their clients are white! It's what the owners said to me personally.
I truly hope people think twice before working for these people or purchasing product from them. They feel that because they are in Park Slope that all the people have money and that they will spend it freely at their gym. People have money for a reason.
Oh they also go through employees like it’s the new thing to do. I was told that it’s because people are just using their club as a pit stop between jobs. Funny, because if you ask any client I worked with I was looking forward to a lasting relationship with them. They’re loss.
Find another gym. The Y on 9th Street has a pool. Their waving initial dues also. Go to the D"mai Urban Day Spa or the other one on 7th and Garfield. You will get a real business that looks at you as a person not as a few bucks.
Good luck find a gym that works for you I wish you the best of luck!!!
Disgruntled former employee.
Run Away As Fast As You Can. Like the MTA, this place is poorly managed and dirty, and as the monthly rates go up, fewer services are offered; however, I have limited transportation options, so I am stuck with the subway, but I have LOTS of other gym options. Just cancelled my membership and going elsewhere. Management sucks. They think it is perfectly acceptable to cancel classes and raise monthly fees with NO notice, and then have the nerve to wonder why you want to leave. Improper billing is the norm, and when attempting to correct it, they blame you or your bank (management never takes responsibility for their ineptness, and front desk personnel use the excuse, "well, I work at the front desk and they never tell me anything"). The people who supposedly can address billing issues work limited hours during the day; if you work a regular 9-5 job they are never available (tried to talk to billing over the phone, and it gave me a headache, and the problem was NOT fixed). The gym caters to the stay-at-home mom who can go to classes in the middle of the day and talk to billing at 11am on a weekday. Oh, and if you want to work out, be ready for limited workout space, funky smells that they try to hide with spray (so not working), and dingy workout mats that are never washed. I question the positive reviews written here, and seriously wonder if they are written by management.
The worst experience....
I joined Slope Fitness four months ago. I had just had a baby and was feeling not so great about my body. I decided to treat myself to training sessions after the birth. Something I have never done because of the expense, but thought if there ever was a time to scrimp and save for it...after giving birth was it! I worked with my trainer for four months. I decided, when my sessions ran out, I would put off paying some bills and buy 10 more sessions because I had developed a positive relationship with my trainer and had been seeing great results. It was a big financial investment for me. Less then seven days after purchasing the expensive training sessions, my trainer was let go. I called them to get a refund (since I didn't even have a chance to use my sessions!). That is where is went so horribly wrong. Not only was the manager unbelievably rude and patronizing. The CEO that I contacted because I was so upset, was even worse!
I don't know why I expected a local business that depends on customer satisfaction to do the right thing. They basically sent the message to me that they had my money now and there was nothing I could say to get it back. I have never been treated so horribly and unreasonably by higher ups. I work in a business of customer satisfaction and I would never compromise my potentially long-term relationship with a paying customer to add a few hundred dollars to my bottom line. They must really be hurting for money...since it was more important to them to keep mine rather than do the right thing. So much for local businesses wanting to stay open...at this rate this place won't last very long!
Training services are non refundable.
Worst Gym in Park Slope.
This gym is in a basement, has no windows, no space to work out, and smells funky. And that's the good news. The bad news is that the group of people who operate this business are the most unprofessional, ignorant, and disrespectful people around town. They must take pride in ignoring complaints because several members have brought up the same issues over the years:
1. improper billing (try to cancel and they still bill you)
2. no management available to resolve issues
3. constant fee increases
The only reason to belong to this gym, which i did for a few years, is if you live around the corner. But that was when the fees were $65 a month. Now they are up to $100 and it's no longer worth the BS.
I'm all for supporting local businesses that aren't chains or franchises because often you get better customer service, and it seems like people invest themselves more attentively into their business. But not at The Slope. They could care less about their members and I'm sick of it. I'm out. You should be too. Eff the Slope and the people who run it!
I recommend Ivy's Class.
I have belonged to this gym for about 2 months. I signed up because of Ivy's class called "Fit For Life". Altho geared toward older crowed anyone can benefit. There is cardio in the beginning 1/2 hour to get the heart rate up and then various weight repetitions. Class is 1 1/2 hrs.
You can increase the weight you are using to maintain the challenge. Already I have noticed a change in my body it feels more fit and firm.
This will be a jumpiing off point for other classes but I will still attend this class as it is full of good energy and Ivy is a doll. She also plays good music during the workout.
