Tips for Bodhi Salon

April 28, 2013

Terrible! The work was incredibly sloppy and there was no way to relax with the male employee yelling throughout the pedicure. I left stressed, with a sore toe where the lady filed the top of my toe instead of my toenail in her haste and lack of attention to detail and felt totally ripped off.

Best kept secret!. I am from Ohio and wanted to get an edgier "do while in NYC on holiday. Have been to several high priced NYC salons over the years and my research took me to Bodhi which was rated number of the top 10 NYC salons in 2010 (same owners, why not give it a try). Took the 45 minute train ride to Brooklyn and wow was it worth it! Great style, great prices...don't be afraid to walk in and tell them to have at it! PS: I got cut and color and both are awesome!

Great color and cut. I had waited almost a year to get my hair cut and colored. It was really long so I had to be READY. Adeline and Jean Marc were very understanding and knew since I had been there before that it was going to be traumatic experience for me. I brought lots of pictures to show them exactly what I wanted. They were both really patient. I had emailed Adeline photo's throughout the year asking questions about color. She was great! I would have gotten tired of hearing from me, but she was wonderful.

So, after all the pix, emails and phone calls, my color and cut turned out great! I love it. No need to go to Manhattan anymore!! Also have to give a shout out to Enzo the beautiful Australian Shepard that greets you as you come in. Awesome.

Great experience!. I went to Bodhi for the Brazilian Blowout. First of all, the experience was so relaxing. Anyone who has ever had a Dominican Blowout may be able to sympathize. It usually involves being under the dryer for so long your ears burn. And then the actual blowout usually involves a scalp burn or two. Ouch! Jean-Marc did a fabulous job and it was totally painless.

And a week later, I am loving it!!! The Brazilian Blowout leaves your hair much softer and moisturized. Blowing it out myself was a lot easier now. It's well worth it!!!

NEVER GO TO BODHI. I had booked an appointment with the salon in June, 2010 ... I was not able to keep the appt as I got very ill. When I called to apologize for not being able to call to cancel because I got sick and I did not know when I would be able to make another appt. the receptionist/owner? said I could come in at a later date and get my hair done with the $85!!! dollars they took out of my acct. Well, I needed surgery and am just now getting around to making an appt for the promised haircut. I was told Guite Rudely that I CANNOT get my hair cut (as promised), that I CANNOT get my money back and that they were busy and could not speak to me and explain why the change of heart! They are rude, and not faithful , they say one thing and do another!! Who ever heard of having to give your credit card number to make an appointment in the first place! Highly Recommmend that you Never GO There to get your hair done!!!!!

Upon making your first appt. we had explained our appt. policy to you and let me refresh it for you, which is if you call less than 24 hrs. to cancel or make changes it will incur a service charge for which ever service you booked. In you case, you make two separate service appointments and cancel the last minutes. You never said you were going for surgery so we expected you to call back when you got better which shouldn't have taken 8 month for you to reschedule. That was a courtesy offer from us so that you may make the appt. under an appropriate time frame which would've been under a month. We never heard from you until now and since then the offer has expired. I am sorry you decided to take this long to rebook your appointment without contacting us earlier to explain your situation and let the offer expires.

Best kept secret in New York!. Jean Marc is an absolute perfectionist; definitely a quality you want in a hair stylist. Both Adeline and Jean Marc know their stuff and take pride in what they do. You will get Manhattan quality at a Brooklyn price. This couple is definitely the way to go.

First time and I'm hooked for life. Being shy and overwhelmed, I walked out of Bodhi in a trance and I had a bit of a delayed reaction to the edgy tres jolie hair that was created for me by Adeline - the color, the cut and the style was so wonderful. I don't even know when I last felt like this - what a kick! The karma was so good to find a hair sister who knows so much - I really needed it because I've been going it alone for so long. Now I look forward to returning over and over to the Bodhi Salon a peaceful, perfect, magical place.

Fave salon for 10 years. Let me just say that I don't let anybody but Jena Marc cut my hair for the last 10 years. At some point I moved from Brooklyn to Manhattan. It took one unsuccessful visit to a fancy salon to realize that Bodhi Salon is worth a trip to Brooklyn. Jean Marc and Adeline are amazing. I am waiting for my hair to go grey so I can become her client too!

With love, Elena

Neighborhood Gem. My only regret about going to Bodhi Salon is that I didn't try it years ago. Jean Marc is skilled at what he does and he shaped my thick, wavy hair from a frizzy mess into a stylish cut. I also really just like the vibe there -- down to earth, good conversation. I have not had color done there yet but I plan on going back soon for that. I am high maintenance about my hair and very hard to please...and I definitely give this salon a major thumbs up!

Bad Hair, Terrible Attitude. I decided on Bodhi Salon after reading many great reviews on Citysearch. I am hoping that my review can cancel out at least a few of the good ones, as I had a terrible experience there. Adeline did my highlights twice and they were fine, not the best ever but I have always had a hard time finding a good place in Brooklyn and I thought she did an okay job and figured that if I communicated better with her I'd end up with better results. Wrong.

The second to last time I went in for highlights I ended up with a lot of red/orange tones, as she didn't keep the foils in for long enough (that is my best guess of what went wrong). I went back and complained and she tried to blame my shampoo but eventually she did a process to my hair that turned all of my roots very orange, and did not do much to fix the bad tones in the highlights. The best part was that she didn't tell me until the end that I was going to be charged about $80 for this process. Why I should have to pay for her mistake, and not even leave the salon happy is beyond me. Before she went through with all of this I had requested that she just touch up my individual highlights, but she wouldn't, as I have a feeling that would have been more work than she wanted to do.

I went back one final time as she promised that next time around it would look great. Wrong again. I still left the salon with many orange/red tones. Adeline had a very bad attitude about the whole situation, and refused to accept any blame. Everyone I asked agreed that my hair looked orange. I also found that her highlights were never right at the root, and I would end up with bad roots within 2 weeks. I have finally just dyed my hair brown on my own (with great results), as I felt that my once beautiful blonde hair was now beyond an easy to fix point.

Also note that they illegally charge more if you use a credit card over cash.

I have also had my hair cut by Jean-Marc, and I would not recommend him for those with long hair. For one he does not listen, and he uses techniques (like the use of a clipper) that are best for those with short hair. I have seen him cut many short haired women and they did look good, but I do not think that long hair is his forte. All in all I would not recommend this salon.

In response to the salon's response below-Why does the "service tax" not apply to cash payments?

Thank you for giving us two chances and we are sorry we did not meet your expectations. First of all, we do have a week of color guarantee policy so if you didn't like it we will redo it for free within the week, but if you were charged then more than a week had definetely gone by since you contacted us. I believe I know who this is so I do have your record on file and it was more than a week since your intial appointment, Regardless, the customers are always right. Also, as regard to Jean-Marc's clipper technique for long hair, it is called the Precision haircut technique, you are probably too young to know this technique. Lastly, we like to point out that we do not charge more for credit card uses. What you are seeing is the service tax that's mandated by the NYS so it is not us. Thanks again and hope you will find someone who can do your hair better in the future.
