Best calamari!!! – This place has the famous sand floor and tropical theme park vibe but the seafood is no joke. The calamari is the BOMB and the peel and eat shrimp is just like being in Georgia. The service is attentive and super cute. I love this place, it's so much fun, and I am planning to have my bday party here. Only wish the salmon was wild and that they had better salads and veggies, it wouldn't kill them to add a few of those to their menu.
The clam chowder is back! – So I decided to give this place one more chance since they always seem to run out of my favorite, the clam chowder. I went there last week with a couple of friends and what a huge improvement! Not only did they have the chowder back, but was greeted by a really nice manager named Nicholas who gave us great service that evening. I'm very happy to see that things are starting to improve at the Surf Bar. They are listening to their customers now and will go out of their way to make them happy.
Freaky new Manager makes regulars run away! ! ! – Oh wow, don't even know where to start. We are regulars of Surfbar since 5 years now and we had seen many awesome people of the SB stuff come and go, but lately things changed a lot:
A new "nordic" Manager is in charge for the Bar and unfortunately, many things had changed since... The good staff leaves and Mr. " I am old school Metal and better than anyone else" is trying to put a new questionable spirit into this once so great spot! As a result we now do have staff which does not give a god damn about their customers, not even to mention the regulars, Music which we would not even except to hear while shopping for shoes at some cheap Union Square spot and a Manager, which reminds us of a redicolous version of "Jekyll & Hides".
Don't get us wrong, but:
A Manager who is obviously pending on and changing his mood on whatever substance he is on should NOT manage a W'burg neighbourhood place which many people from all over the five boroughs love and value. And: If you as a Manager do not know how to treat customers and Regulars because of just being a influenced individual without any experience in managing restaurants, you should NOT be in position in "managing" a Bar like this great spot!
As for us? We will not come back until this Individual is gone! And obviously, other Regulars got upset as well, or why all of a sudden you are in need of a Doorman???
good burger/good beer – Surf bar is pretty chill in a good way.Service was a little slow, and the food took way longer than it should have, but the burger was real good. They were stingy with the fries though. The menu has a lot of seafood on it, and some unique dishes as well. The place itself is pretty cool, good music and decor.
great hangover food – Drinking like a fish the night before? Massive headache? Wondering where you are and what happened? Well that is how I felt when I went here for breakfast. I had the lobster omelet and it came with all these extras... potatoes, greens, a piece of corn on the cob, grilled tomato wedge. Presentation was awesome, waitstaff was friendly (and sympathetic?), and the neat thing is the decor. As soon as you walk in, you'll know what I mean.
Surf's Up – Awesome chowders and fish specials. The ambiance is great, especially in the summer when you can linger over drinks in the garden long after you've finished dinner and dessert. The tropical drinks are always fun, especially when you're walking on a sand-covered floor surrounded by surfboards & seascapes. Definitely one of my favorite places to take friends for a laid-back time - it's cool enough to be a Williamsburg hangout, but not so cool that you can't get in on weekends because of all the bridge-and-tunnelers.
Huh? – This place WAS Italian when it first opened about three years ago and it was very good. We went back recently and I am not sure what happened, but it's a disaster. It's half fish shack/surfer bar and half Italian food, which does not work! The service was awful and the food was terrible. Skip this place.
disappointing – Thought the setting is great, the service was horrendous and inept and the menu was confusing. The fish of the day can be prepared five different ways according to the menu, but fails to mention that those five different ways are just five different sauces that come out with the whole, deep fried fish. Under no circumstance should you order the fish "taco" which is more like a big mess of a burrito. Stick to the drinks.
Food with style – Unlike some of the overly hipster restaurants on Bedford, the laidback atmosphere is the crowning glory to this little place. Food is great and varied (the calamari and spinach ravioli were delicious), kind of a seafood shack you'd find up in Maine with New York style. Service was good but relaxed, and in the course of our meal we heard everything from Pete Yorn and the Pixies to Akinele and L.L. Cool J. It made for a great time.
Nice place – The food was good overall. The lamb could have been cooked a little more.
The ravioli plate was small, not enough for the money. My friend wasn't even partially full after eating.
The caeser salad was great. The fried calamari was even better! And they give lots of free bread.
The waitress forgot to serve some drinks and was pretty ditzy.
The atmosphere was nice but it was a little too dark.
