The Scene
The original Los Pollitos is a takeout joint in Sunset Park; this Slope spin-off presents an expanded but similarly inexpensive menu in slightly more decorous surroundings. It's a takeout joint, too, but has candlelit tables set up across from the stainless-steel counter. The more than gracious waitstaff win you over with their obvious pride: They know this is a special place.
The Food
The long menu offers standard Mexican dishes, executed with rarely seen care and skill. Bypass tacos and burritos in favor of gorditas--swollen corn tortillas, covered with tomatillo salsa and rich cream. South American additions to the menu, like perfectly fried green plantains and garlicky pork, are uniformly successful. The crowning achievement is the roast chicken, which attracts crowds from all over the city.

We had brunch at Los Pollitos II this Sunday, and I am now recovering from a rather unplesant bout of gastrointestinal unpleasan tness after having a breakfast style burrito. The dinners may be one thing, but at least from our experience, stay away from the brunch.

this is definitely the worst mexican restaurant in parkslope. my margarita tasted like it came from a margarita mix and dilluted with water. i had to put plenty of salt and black pepper on my food. the service was so slow that i had to ask for salt and pepper twice, margarita-twice, napkins-twice and also had to remind them that we ordered guacamole. when the guacamole was finally served, it had no taste. it was supposed to come with chips, but the chips never came. when they gave us the appetizers we ordered, they took our appetizer plates. we were like "huh?". i will never go back to this restaurant again.

The food itself is a cut above other Mexican takeout in Park Slope (you'll find better in Sunset Park). Excellent rotisserie chickens, sopes, quesadillas, enchiladas and tortilla soup. Delivery service, however, is abominable; they have frequently messed up orders taken by phone, and I stopped ordering from them after they simply lost an order I had called in, didn't deliver it, and claimed when I called back that I must not have placed the order. (Why would I make up the story? Does anyone get a kick out of calling random restaurants and asking about phantom orders?) Enjoyed their food; can't rely on or reward their service.

When the waiter recommends the flan, trust him--he made it himself, from his mother's recipe.
