In the grand tradition of Williamsburg bars, Union Pool transforms a defunct shop (generations-old A-1 Pool and Pest Supply) into an enticing place to kick back. The owners' handcrafted touches--including deep blue booths, creamy pressed-tin walls, a smooth cast-concrete bar top and green tiles from the old Shaeffer factory--coalesce with nifty remnants of aquatic signage. Barflies bask in the glow of an old-time refrigerator, where lemons and martini glasses--plus the odd stalk of ginger--chill. Creative bartenders tinker with the sauce to mix up espresso martinis and pomegranate margaritas, while wildstyle DJs work the turntables. Summertime guests spill into the coveted open-air back patio, big enough to hold a teeming party.

So my friends and I went there last friday night. We consider ourselves to be open minded individuals. We certainly would not call ourselves hipsters by any stretch. We walked into this spot and all eyes turned. I think my jeans weren't tight enough for this place. We had a good time overall but everyone in that place looked the exact same. It's kind of an odd concept that hipsters consider themselves "independent" and "non-conforming" yet now, they all look the same. bar itself is ok but the crowd was a little lame. good spot if you are in the hood, but not worth making the trek from manhattan.

This bar is great when it's not crowded, otherwise it gets swampy very quickly. The patio area is great, and the drinks are quite reasonably priced. Convenient to trains, too. Good shows and music, too.

If you actually want to hang out and have some beers with friends come on the early side, cause this place gets insanely crowded and becomes a hot awkward mess of hipsters standing around ogling each other but are too cool to actually go up and approach people. They have some cool shows too sometimes.
