This Park Slope find does double duty as a gay bar and neighborhood hangout..
In Short
Excelsior's crimson walls reflect cheer onto clients' rosy complexions, creating a warm, welcoming vibe. The stylish decor falls somewhere between art deco and pure '70s, with yellow gumdrop lights overhanging a wide mahogany bar. Brooklyn still doesn't move as fast as Manhattan, so this scene isn't quite as cruisy. In fact, Excelsior feels in many ways like a casual dating service for outerborough gay men.
Great neighborhood hangout.
Great service,outdoor deck and garden.
Jukebox is always really fun. great place to hang out with friends and to meet new ones too.
Laid-back gem. I first visited Excelsior about a week after moving to Brooklyn from Chicago. What a joy! Low-pressure, friendly and attractive atmosphere. Bartenders without attitude. The West Village has its attractions, but I know where to go to relax.
Neighborhood bar done right. Excelsior is a great neighborhood bar. I've met the owners and found them both charming and friendly, and the same can be said for all of the bartenders I've encountered. The clientele is friendly and chatty, the drinks are rather good, and the jukebox is wonderfully eclectic.
A BIG 10!!!!. Great neighborhood bar. Been going there since it opened. Brilliant, friendly bar staff. Great deck and garden. A true haven from the "Manhattan Scene"!!! Great juke box, good crowd.
Solid Neighborhood Standby. This is a great neighborhood bar. Certainly not as cruisey as Manhattan bars, but it makes up for the lack of high-powered scene with friendliness, lots of space, and a very nice garden out the back.
Wish the girls were here. Excelsior is definitely the prettiest bar on the block--if only more ladies came here. The crowd was more mixed when it first opened, now it's almost all men. However, the drinks are still divine, and the bartenders lovely. Great jukebox, too.
