Summer or winter, this bar is always comfortable..
The Scene
Step in and you feel like you've entered a tunnel, with the wooden bar that runs 30 feet back, through a wall partition and into the spacious back room. As in a casino, it's difficult to keep track of the time, with the only outside light coming from a small window up front, and numerous diversions including a TV (sometimes showing Japanese anime), two pinball machines, a pool table and jukebox.
The Draw
The Abbey has a solid selection of liquor and seven beers on tap, which are a buck off during happy hour (Monday through Friday, 3pm to 8pm). The clientele ranges from edgy hipsters to Hasidic men and blue-collar townies, the latter of whom pile in Monday nights for the pool tournament.
Can't go wrong here. As long as you're not some high maintenance yuppie snob there's a lot to like about this place. Movies, good music, a pool table, and cheap drinks, especially at happy hour. What's not to love?
Gay Night Is Hoppin'. A group of friends had a get-together here on a Sunday night and the crowd was really quite amazing. Stuffed full of attractive, friendly guys -- a refreshing change from the typical men you run. I did notice that some straight couples seemed a little put off (and in fact, some just decided not to come in) after they noticed the place was filled with gay boys.
Let Me Use The JukeBox!. The Abbey would be a great neighborhood bar - and was not too long ago - until they posted that horrible sign on the jukebox that reads "no jukebox after 10:30pm". The bartenders play music of their own choosing and they always choose crap. It's a good jukebox and the patrons should be allowed to choose the music they want to listen to.
Williamsburg's best hangout. Super friendly bartenders. Good happy-hour specials. Definitely the best hang-out/meet friends bar in Williamsburg. Another plus: Sundays are gay, and it's always gay-friendly. If you have no other agenda besides talking and drinking, this is the place.
